To me, it is the greatest thing ever to happen. Completely not kidding.

The show's characters, writing, voice acting and so on is very strong and comparable with adult series. It just happens to be aesthetically for children so there is a stigma about watching it. Once you get over that it is high quality.

The fan community surrounding the show have produced gigabytes of music, art, games, comics and stories, and there have been real life meetups and conventions as big as any other fandom. That aspect is how people really get into ponies, they follow all the latest fan content (I myself have more Pony songs on my ipod than record label or videogame ones combined)

Salnax's link is to the 87-page Pony thread on VGC. Ask any of the people who post there about it. If you really want to know, watch an episode for yourself, they are all over Youtube, and decide for yourself whether it is good.

Re: "pitiful" - liking something should not be pitiable. Having it take over your life is; same for any other pursuit, you can take it too far. Watching it and following the news site for it is in no way worse than arguing about videogame sales on this forum.

tl;dr It's not ironic. It's not counterculture. It's just what I like.

See it is counterculture.

Society tells you its wrong or "nerdy" to watch girls programming yet you like it anyway despite what people might think. Thats counterculture.

Well liking something can be pitiful. Its all context. Whether how much the writing/plot/fan creations this thing gets, its still a childrens show that being enjoyed by adults. Im sure theres plenty more age appropriate shows to get attached to. All this fan support just tells me that theres a lot of people out there that refuse to "grow up".

I dont really mean to criticize, I am just genuinely curious and trying to understand.

If you are just curious, then at least watch an episode so you can say that you've seen it and don't understand the appeal

Its appeal is irrelevant to me. Im 24, its a childrens show, moreso a girls show. I just cant do it.

Im curious as to why grown men do this. Counterculture? Fear of adulthood? Gender experimentation? I dont know but I certainly do not want to find out firsthand.

I seriously doubt why Brony's like this show is for "Gender Experimentation."

Well another word for that is called "getting in touch with ones feminine side". Possible.

IMO For grown men to like this its a fear of adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it. Hence the regression to children's programming.

Now why a "girls" show is another question that I cant begin to fathom why grown men like that. Now I want to be delicate here.....but lets just say I think if your a grown men watching My Little Pony......it would be relatively safe to predict that their quality of life may not be as high as the average adult.

What you're doing, it's called stereotyping. Don't judge someone if you don't know them. That's my policy

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

Lol at people calling MLP fans childish, rebellious, have psychological issues etc based off of how the show looks.

You people are only using the show's superficial traits to determine what the show is like. If anyone's childish, its you people. I've never watched the show (and I'm assuming most of you haven't either) so it would be foolish of me to determine the maturity of the show based solely off of its aesthetics. The show could have a deep, mature, quality, core buried beneath its childish exterior. Until you've watched it, you have no idea how good the show actually is.

You people remind me of my friends that say Ratchet & Clank is childish solely due to its aesthetics. And then go on to say a game like Call of Duty is mature, not because of the deep gameplay, but because of its superficial traits (realistic characters, guns, blood, etc). I guess, for some people, presentation really IS everything. Screw what's beneath the exterior. If it looks like XYZ, then it is XYZ.

I accept that it may /be/ counterculture but I meant that isn't why I like it. I've always liked cute toys and Nintendo type videogames.

@Fusioncode

A fad that has been going on since ~Jan 2011 when the internet first really discovered it? If it's a fad then so's the Wii.

Not going to respond to direct trolling, if anyone has serious questions you know what to do.

Im not gonna push this much further. But it isnt trolling to ask you the tuff questions. You know theres a society stigma and I am asking to try to get to the bottom of the mentality. Dodging the tuff questions doesnt help you argument.

You say you like it. Now I am asking why......given that theres plenty other adult oriented franchises out there with equal great writing/characters/and fan creations?

The media say it's a girls' show and you take that as fact? What about CoD only being for 18-25 males, or WoW being for basement nerds,or Pokemon being for little kids?

I have one question. Did you like any of the Pixar movies? If not, can you understand their appeal to a general audience not limited to kids? It's exactly the same with ponies, the S2 finale was essentially an hour long Disney movie.

Well, I like other stuff as well. Homestuck, anime, Pixar movies, sci-fi films and TV shows in general. None of them has the same capacity for fan content. I'm mostly in this for the music. Writing and characters yes but nothing touches ponies on the last one.

Maybe the show is good. Maybe it's got a lot of great humor, good writing, and social commentary. That still doesn't change the fact that the show was made specifically for little girls. As good as it may be, it isn't made for manly guys like me and Gilgamesh.

Here's the deal: I won't watch My Little Pony if Lisa Simpson doesn't play for the school football team.

Anyway, ill probably watch the show. The VGC community introduced me to one amazing (Game of Thrones) maybe they'll do it again with My Little Pony. Unlike some people here, I can appreciate quality writing regardless off the coat of paint it has. Hopefully some people will mature and reach the same mentality.
