Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: "PSN and Live too far developed for us to catch up"

I read this and while it is true that Sony and Microsoft have been working on their services for years now, all I can sit and ask myself is:

What the hell have they been doing all these years?

The answer was inside them. But it was the wrong one: Friend Codes.

That just seems kinda lazy, PSN is catching up to XBL, origin is trying to catch up to Steam...

Better question to ask what features do you really think it won't have?

We know it has in=game (pause game) chat and video chat.
We know you can make friends instantly without long codes.
We know you'll have usernames and avatars (miis).
We know it will have some sort of acheivement idea around miiverse, maybe not what we're used to in Live/PSN and it won't be forced on devs. (with 3rd parties doing it for everything already you'd have to expect them to continue)
We know you'll have in-game (same game) chat as there are already 3rd party headphones coming.
We know you'll have strong community system. (miiverse)
We know you'll have multiple accounts per system (up to 20 I think i read specifically)
We know you'll have digital downloads, which means obviously DLC, demos, and patches.
We know you'll have media services from every major supplier and a browser (how good browser is, is up for concern, but with a tablet controller and app patching capabilities, I'm sure it will be fine)
We know you'll have wireless-n connectivity or LAN
We know you'll have all this even when TV is being used by something else through the gamepad
We know you'll have this as a standard set across ALL owners because most of it comes through the gamepad and not required extra devices like headsets and cameras/kinect.
We know you'll have just about every major feature you would want or expect because they are derivatives of the things I listed above.

What likely won't be there are certain content items like buddy watching movies that Live offers, cross-game chat while still playing a game, Home-like feature (though Miiverse maybe that), specific ties to content providers, cross-platform multiplayer like a rare few games on PS360 have done, etc.

I think people really need to look at the big picture of details already known when they hear snippets of out of context quotes like this.

THis was an awesome feature for Netflix on Live which they killed off in the last dashboard update. I use to use this with friends that live in differant states. MS said the reason had somthing to do with how the new infastructure was set up, that Netflix would have to write the code from scratch for this feature to work again. THey said it is a possiblity this may come back. Very sad. I miss this feature a lot.

that actually sucks, i enjoyed Netflix on my friends' 360. I felt it was the best of the console versions (crappy connections notwithstanding) so its pretty much like the others now??

Who isn't trying?  Nintendo looks like they are, to some extent, trying something different.  Will need to see how their service works.  Maybe it will do something.  In regards to Microsoft, they keep rolling out new features.  Will need to see what IE on XBox will mean, and Smart Glass.

WHats different?? ALl i heard them talk about was Miiverse, which just sounds like a souped up version of HOME which has been available for years. Why must they be different in the first place??? WHy?? I would just settle for something similar to PSN/LIVE that is almost as good. It seems everytime they try to be different it starts off great and fizzles out quickly. WiiSPeak is just one example, why not have had a real mic like everyone else in the damn world. Or why not have had an account for online titles like EVERYONE else, instead they had it tied to the system, cause that was much better

I was asking who is not trying.  Am I right in reading this that Microsoft and Nintendo both don't seem to be trying?

MS has been tweaking and improving their online for years. Ninty didnt do squat with Wii. ANd im not seeing them doing much with Wii U, except that one feature. SO yeah, Ninty isnt really trying

"MS has been tweaking and improving their online for years"
in which ways
also if you want online why dont you buy a PC instead?
