Forums - Nintendo - The Nintendo WiiU is next-gen because...?

Because everyone will copy it.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

It's a questione that i made myself before reading an article.

I'm quite disappointed to see that people think that hardcore goes with graphics and the also next-gen goes with graphics.

For me the WiiU is next-gen because introduces an old way of play, the GamePad, in a totally new way, the screen and the in build double screens.

This is next-gen because never before you could play a game with the TV on OFF, also you totally have a console that has every game on digital support, on retail copy and on digital support by retailers, that's pretty new too.

Next-gen means that the whole system works differently from the previous one, hardcore it's not a term for console also, not alone at least, you can only give that term by mentioning games that are not kids stuff or really easy even for a 3 to 7 years old.

That's what i always thinked about games, i made my opinion playing the SNES and now that the GamePad is coming, in such an innovation, that's what i will call next-gen also: innovation.

And now also a question: are you sick of people not understanding this or you are one of 'em?

Who would want to download WiiU games anyway? WiiU has only 8GB storage. With only 1 game your WiiU is full, and it has not to be games like Mass Effect 3 wich are 15GB.

The WiiU is next gen becoz Wii is current gen. But technology wise, Wii was not different from the GameCube, and WiiU has finally catched up to the current gen HD consoles.

How are you able to store games on your PS3? By paying a LOT extra to have a hard drive, correct? And without that HDD, your system has zero storage, yes? WiiU is going to give users the option of hard drive, allowing you to have 2x or even 3x as much space - because you can buy what you want from where you want - for the same price. I know exactly where I'll be able to throw down $60 and have a full terabyte of storage for my WiiU. Can you do that for your PS3?

8GB of storage space is just what the WiiU has without you doing that, and anybody who actually thinks that the 8GB is what the WiiU is limited to is, quite frankly, a complete idiot.

By a HDD that is standard in every SKU, we dont have to buy a seperate HDD and shelve extra money. The HDD is included in the pricetag of a PS3. Why should I have the option of a HDDless PS3? HDD should be standard. And we can always opt for a bigger 2,5" HDD whenever we feel like. That is an option to PS3.

Good luck finding a 1TB for 60 dollaz lolz

So, it may have 8gb of internal storage (not even sure if this is a truly confirmed peice of information mind) but it also supports external hard drives and , SDHC (and SDXC in the future), and therefore the storage onboard is irrelevant to whether or not people buy full games, if you plan to go that route you will plan to get a drive of some sort.

We're still waiting for Sony's approval on that one.

You can upgrade the hard drive in any PS3 yourself, just use a laptop hard drive like Turkish said.

The WiiU is next gen because there was a clear gap between this piece of hardware and the last (6 years). I generally dislike the phrase next gen, its intentionally derogatory towards the Wii. At the beginning of the gen, I didn't mind, but especially now, when people like Geoff Keighly say next gen, I almost think they're referring to the PS4 and Xbox 3 as this generation is well and truly in its later half.

I still lump WiiU with Move/Kinect and now Smart Glass as a half-gen step up but not a true next generation.

I expect WiiU to have a very short life (4 years) and WiiU2 to come out mid-life of PS4/720 and be an overall superior system.

Yeah, but you can use memory cards and external storage discs for that.

yes,  ps3 supports any standard hard drive.  it's done that since day 1 in fact.  i got 500 Gb for $50 2 years ago.  welcome to 2006, the future is waiting.
