The fact that all of management in Nintendo has been aware of this from the start is indicative of the fact they were definitely planning for him to be a hit. Either that or they just threw around so many memes this E3 they were certain one of them would stick but didn't know which it would be

Then again, they did back reference "My body is ready"...so you know...

Well, I am sure they are aware people are watching, and then spawn a bunch of quirky stuff to see what sticks.  It is likely done on multiple levels, which range from trying to prevent the presentations from being boring, to doing things that are bait to become memes.  Then see which ones particularly resonate and run with them.  When done in a genuine way, fitting in context, the way Nintendo did (and not too seriously) then it works.  There have been a number of other attempts to try to force things, that aren't like this.  With NSAF and My Body is Ready, you do have stuff that is light hearted enough, and if it doesn't catch on, then you just chalk it up as part of the E3 business.  If any does catch on, then you can capitalize on it.

What happens when there is heavy forcing of a meme, is that, if it fails to catch on, you look stupid.  Also, you have to let it breath some, and let the community on the Internet run with it and make it their own.  Total control is right out.  Memes grow with the Internet is the owner of the direction it goes in, rather than the initial spawner.  They feel part of it, and it is theirs.

Looks reasonable. now we're curious about whether it will become as big as Giant Enemy Crab and Riiiiiiiiiidge Raaaaaacer.

Non-Specific Action Figure has a wider range of applications than Giant Enemy Crab (max damage) and Riiiiiidge Raaaacer), so it is possible, unless people get bored of it first or Nintendo overplays it, killing it.  It is more likely to get a KnowYourMeme episode.
