| Dodece said: I am supremely disappointed in some members here. What is the major complaint with most series. That they have become repetitive. What is the major complaint about EA. That it just churns out the same games each year with only minor improvements. How do you fix something like that. You change up the formula to keep it fresh. There isn't any proof that playing with others must result in the game becoming less scarey. It can actually be the complete opposite. I bet it hasn't occurred to any of you that the monsters in Dead Space are reanimated corpses. That means that any partners you may have in game are truly mixed blessings. They can save you, but on the other hand they can be turned. Not only turned, but turned into extremely dangerous foes. That could be a constant fear. Imagine what happens if your team gets overwhelmed, and you hear over your headset someone screaming they just got face fucked. Which you know means in about five or six seconds a big armor clad flamethrower using monster is about to spawn almost right on top of you. What happens then is pretty obvious your team dynamic breaks down, as all your teammates panic, and scatter for their lives. Which puts you in a even more terrifying position. Probably even more terrifying then anything in the previous two games. Your now alone in a world where you cannot win alone. You can't backtrack to meet up with your squad, because the new monster is probably hunting one of you down, and that means it could end up being a one on one kind of situation for the unlucky one if they don't keep moving away from the monster. So now you have a problem to deal with. You need to regroup, find a save point to spawn your lost friend back, and try to deal with a monster that is much stronger then normal. All of which means you have to face really dangerous obstacles. Hell if the developers really want to feed your need. They could make each player specialized. How calm would you be if you are almost lifeless, but your not the healer. While the healer is worried sick, because he cannot use heavy weapons to fight, and he ran to a part of the level filled with monsters that shrug off small arms fire. Now your not just worried for your own ass, but your worried for his ass too. Now you can't just chill out, and recoup in a safe room. You got to get your ass to him as soon as possible. Without obviously getting yourself killed in the process. The point I am making is that this whole team play concept. Could actually make the game more nerve wracking, because it makes it that much harder on you. Now the developers can get you used to having something that is going to feel relatively comforting. Which they can not only take away, but make you desperate to reclaim. Even worse is now it isn't a you die you go back five steps situation. Now you need someone to bring you back from the dead. So you really don't want to be in that position. Locked in some safe room waiting for someone to open the door, and hoping that not everyone dies before they can get to you. Yes being alone in the dark can be scarey, but so can being separated from a group. The difference is when you are alone you have a persistent sense of control. You get used to being in that heightened state. In a group you naturally spread the load to reduce your own stress. So not only does going from that relatively relaxed state to pure panic seem more palpable. You are also more vulnerable to being shocked in the first place, because you aren't super aware. If your just talking, and your partner gets yanked up into the ceiling how prepared could you have been at that moment. Hell I hope EA does exactly this kind of thing, because it would have replay going through the roof. |
yes it would be cool if some of these things would be like you describe and would really work but i have NEVER seen a movie or played a game with someone else and had this "scary" feeling then. i only can have it if i'm absolutely alone in a dark room with headphones and nothing else than game/movie sound. and if i would hear my teammate screaming (if he would be seperated from me in another area), i wouldn't be scared, i would be amused that he had a shock right now...
i just can't imagine that i could be scared even if i would never see my teammate in the game, which would be the only way it could maybe work. so as long as i don't see an ingenious new concept which would desroy all my "fears" about playing a game or seeing a movie with someone else, i hope i can play the game alone and have a great scary experience.
