So basically you didn't like it because you sucked at the game? Explains a lot, lol.
And if you played it without Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/) then I'm guessing you pirated it as that's the only way you could have played it on PC without it. I'm guessing you didn't actually play Half-Life 2 very much as the "checkpoint" mechanics were simply autosaving at set points. You could save your game at any point regardless. I also find it odd you didn't like the puzzles and level design considerring it was an evolution of the same design philosophy used in Half-Life 1 but utilising the new physics engine. Did the "simple" level design confuse you? 
And when did I argue Half-Life 1 wasn't revolutionary?
