I don't understand why people can't accept that we have the next PS2 on our hands, though since the demographics are so split in this generation, it probably won't completely overwhelm the second and third place consoles like the PS2 did.

So could others, and don't forget all the casual games on the Wii

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

This game will have an incredibly minor impact on the wii sales. GTA's demographic (huge as it is) mostly does not encompass the Wii's main audience, casuals and first-time gamers.
The HD consoles will get a big boost, however.

Don't know yet, KH could go Wii
or could stay on PS3, then PS3 domination is inevitable. =)
Tales did go to Wii,
Namco announced new Tales game for HD console. Since x360 is not selling in Japan, most like it will be PS3, then PS3 domination is inevitable. =)
same with Guitar hero(higher sales on the Wii),
wrong,
wii Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock 1.26m
ps2 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock 2.51m
ps3 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock 0.59m
the highest sales on PLAYSTATION brand consoles.
same with Resident Evil
1 remake and 1 gun play game, NO real Resident evil. You failed again.
So could others, and don't forget all the casual games on the Wii
So could PS3 domination be inevitable.

Enjoy. =)

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

Wow, I didn't think anyone would use the Sony Defence Force argument in real life with no trace of saracasm ...

Certainly, the PS2 version of the game has sold well but that is meaningless in a discussion of the PS3; much like the move from the SNES to the N64, and the N64 to the Gamecube, there is nothing that states that a PS2 owner will buy a PS3 (in fact, sales to date suggest the opposite).

@HappySqurriel:
just quick answer, why people who has ps2 and guitar should buy GH3 for ps3, when they could buy it for ps2?

Just don`t be suprised, when GH4 sales will improve over PS3 and decrease over ps2.

there is nothing that states that a PS2 owner will buy a PS3
you must be BLIND? you call GAMES - NOTHING? 16 games of that list already coming to ps3.
When all these games will be released on PS3, ps2 users will switch to ps3. Damn, switch from PS2 to wii, which has SAME graphics, just because of different controls? LOL. Dream ON.

Wow this thread took off =P Perhaps indicative of the anticipation for GTA IV? Perhaps.

Anyways, I wanted to address the idea that this will somehow take sales away from the Wii. While I think there will definitely be some folks who opt to use their cash at that time on the PS3 or 360 and GTA IV I don't know if I believe that those who might of considered a Wii aren't going to come back to it later.

But also I have to question how much of a demographic overlap there is in the first place. How many people are really having a hard time choosing between Wii Sports and GTA IV? It seems to me when considering that choice if you answer "no" to one of the two questions below you go for Wii Sports and otherwise you go for GTA IV.

Question 1: "Do you know what GTA IV is?" - Yes or No
Question 2: "Do like GTA games?" - Yes or No

So while I have absolutely zero doubt about its ability to push 360 and PS3 hardware I have to seriously doubt its ability to diminish Wii hardware sales, particularly if they are still selling out at the time which is possible but I am not entirely convinced will be the case (yes I know that is blasphemy to some of you).

To Each Man, Responsibility

I would like to interject a concept into the arguments that has seemed to have gone overlooked. Hell has been overlooked in the brand loyalty argument for quite some time. A little decision Sony implemented not to long ago called removing backwards compatibility. There is little doubt that the feature was perhaps the strongest brand loyalty argument any console could make to consumers.

Ironically if you are a real fanatic of the series there seems to be only one next generation console that allows you to play all the recent installments in the series. The irony is that it isn't the PS3, but instead the 360. Who would have thought that three years ago, but here we are with gamers having to make the judgment call from scratch. How relevant is brand loyalty when its lost its most concrete benefit.

I read an interesting post today on another forum. Where a poster was inquiring about which 360 to purchase. They were taking advantage of a promotion from EB games. You turn in your old PS2, and five games. In exchange you pay only $150 for a core 360. Interestingly there is a argument that you could probably transfer your grand theft auto fetish over to the 360 with a minimum of effort. The previous three titles could probably cost you under thirty dollars.

Basically moving onto a 40gig PS3 means you do have to forfeit the other titles in the series, but if you are a avid fan of the series shouldn't you go with the purchase of a 360. Not only do you still get access to all those game let alone a better commitment to backwards compatibility in the future, but also the additional content. A serious question to be asked why buy a PS3 for this game if you are a avid fan of the series.

@Dodece,

That is an interesting point, but I think the lack of BC is easily the larger issue for the PS3 of the two. Perhaps I am a bit bias in that regard as I am one of those people who loves the GTA series but refuses to buy a PS3 without BC, its worth mentioning that similarly I currently don't see value in buying a 360 due to PC library overlap...hopefully one or both of those things will change.

Either way you are correct that I hadn't really considered it. Now more than ever I am extremely interested to see how GTA IV software sales break down amongst the two consoles.

@ BrainBox, great analysis, I personally think that there will be another GTA this gen, which will outsell SA.

If GTA IV were to fail to outsell San Andreas I would predict if there was another full fledged GTA title this generation, it probably be a Wii, DS, or even another PSP title.

I’m going to assume that GTA IV will be more expensive to produce than San Andreas, and if were to gross less, then from a purely business stand point it wouldn’t be the best move economically to produce another title at that budget for it to meet similar results when you could opt to support platforms with larger install bases at less cost.

Even more so when there will be downloadable content and such to help drum up revenue on the cheap continuously after such a hefty investment.

All pure speculation on my part.

- The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 should both see moderate boosts from the game.  However, since the PS3 should see a larger boost since it’s more likely potential X360 buyers will already have a system.  Halo 3 probably had a greater impact on X360 sales but the sum-total of PS3 + X360 affect of GTAIV might be greater.

-  I think GTAIV sales on will be stronger on the X360 at for at least the initial month due to the much greater install base of X360 in NA.  Europe sales and long term sales will probably be stronger on the PS3 due to association with the PS brand name and PS3 growth being higher in Europe.

- GTAIV will obviously sell extremely well but I don’t think it will sell as well as it’s predecessors.  First and foremost the install bases of consoles it’s being released on have a way to go.  Also I think that in the last generation we saw a large saturation of “gangster” games in the wake of GTA3 and its follow-ups and I don’t think demand will be quite as high this time around.  So I think it will sell a couple million less than the previous games.

- Considering the nature of the market for the Wii, GTAIV will have zero impact on Wii sales which will continue to be as great as supply allows for that time period.  Prospective Wii buyers will not be deterred whatsoever by GTAIV on the HD systems.  Also the impending release of SSBB and eventually Mario Kart Wii will be a factor in keeping Wii demand extremely high if it wasn’t already.  Both those games should wind up with 7 million + lifetime sales. So overall the market landscape shouldn’t change very much due to GTAIV.
