That's really bizzare, but I'll take your word for it. I noticed the site just bogged down again on another 9000+ post thread hitting the front page, and perked right back up after it was quickly locked, so you've obviously nailed it down. Thanks for the quick work!
You could always cache them then update the cache every couple of minutes. That would reduce the db queries.
What if you did it in thread.php instead? Instead of determining the last page by looking up the number of posts in each thread, and passing in start=100 or whatever, pass in start=lastpage, and then let thread.php determine where the last page is. That way you don't have to do 20 different lookups on the front page.
