Even if they won't repeat PS3's horrible mistake pricing PS4 $599, at $299-349 or even $399 for the entry level model it will be quite expensive for most people at least for the first 3 years, so it will make sense to keep on selling PS3 for a few years, just like Sony did with PS2. PS3 won't last 12 or more years total life and 6 after next gen launch like PS2, but 3 years after PS4 launch, for a total of 10 years should be feasible. Obviously it would be smart to release a true Slim version, not only to save production, shipping and warehousing costs, but also because retailers will like its package to be smaller when it will be bargain priced, shelf space doesn't come for free.

So far, the PS3 is doing well. It may be a late bloomer but for Nintendo and Microsoft it's quite obvious that this generation is over.

If the rumoured HW specs are true then it definitely won't be. Though perhaps with a whole gen tech gap the PS4 could be almost fully PS2 bc using an emulator, though HD upgrades for PS2 games are good. PS5 will be fully PS3 bc using an emulator.

I usually buy a console in its 2nd or 3rd year. I'd like 7 years between console generations so I can really get my money's worth out of a console before the next one launches.

Microsofts has bin making a steady and increasing profit from the Xbox division, they don't have to enter the next gen just because Sony is selling more consoles.

Looking at Kinect : XB360 attach rate plummeted even in USA, actually lower than in Europe currently, and looking at Kinect Star Wars numbers, with a Star Wars : Kinect weekly attach rate next to 80% in USA and to 90% in Europe, is this one the only thing keeping it alive now? Could we call it a miniature killer app?

Sluggish japan HW and SW, except great SW for PSP.
Overall bad Japan isn't enough to prevent global HW and SW overall growth, even PSV HW grows a little bit, but it really needs more games.
Crazy PC SW sales thanks to Diablo III and despite partial tracking of it and even more partial tracking of PC games in general!
