Forums - Gaming - Is it me or has the Heyday of (Fantasy) WRPGs Passed?

I'd go the other way. I'd say the WRPG is likely to be the next "fad genre" as the epoch of FPS oversaturation dies down, standing in the long line of fads from 8-bit platformers, 16-bit fighters, early 3D racers, sandbox games, and FPSes

This is precisely what I've been thinking.

The RPG genre is getting more and more "streamlined" and "friendly", developers want everyone to play RPG's today, at almost any cost. The cost is basically immersion and depth, the very hallmarks and key points of the genre.

This generation has seen an absurd amount of WRPG's sold but that doesn't mean that RPG's as a genre is doing very well for true fans, much like the FPS genre that has been butchered and reduced to a parody of itself in the 7th generation. Imagine if Michael Bay directed all movies... Mindless drivel is okay every now and them, even I think so and it can be a pleasant experience, but when it becomes the defining norm, there's cause for worry in my humble opinion.

I've expressed this countless times on vgchartz and I will express it yet again; I worry about the future of the RPG, the "R" is being faded to black and even the "P" is starting to take a back seat. "Interactive Movie" is more like the direction gaming as a whole has taken. One hilarious side effect of this turn in development is that a lot of people who have been hating on the MGS franchise for years are now praising their favourites for doing the exact same thing, only a lot more poorly.
