5+ is fine, it's been like that for like ever lol

10+ year life span. You always hear about how devs never max out the capacity of a console so lets see it.
20+ years... I wish we were still getting brand new SNES and Genesis games

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
Definitely long term. That way money can be saved for the games. I've never been one for extraordinary power in my systems, so long term consoles are prefered.

The long term solution leads to manufacturer's trying to make their hardware "futureproof" which can only result in a ridiculously overpriced system and the vast majority of people doesn't want this either. So in general, it's best to aim for a lifespan of approximately five years before a successor gets released and by year 4 there's a good idea of how much life the system has left in it based on developer support and consumer interest; and based on this it can be determined if the successor should be launched after five years or rather six, maybe even seven. |
The only reason this whole 'future proof' business even got off the ground was because people became obssesed with unimportant things like graphical quality and online accounts, to the point where companies caved in.
If console makers truly were interested in gameplay first and appreciated the importance of fine craftsmanship they would not need to switch hardware every 5 years. The most successful consoles with the most diverse libraries are the ones which have been around the longest.
Look at the NES, the original Gameboy, the PlayStation and PS2, the DS. Also look at consoles who tried to shorten this cycle and you'll see that many times they did it purely for business reasons. Look at the Dreamcast, the Xbox 360 and the DS. Each of them launched a very short period of time after their predecessor in an attempt to gain market share, not because their predecessor had been exhausted. Same goes for Wii U in my opinion.
This is why I hate Epic Games so much, especially with all the recent chatter about the requirements to run UE4. They are forcing the hands of hardware manufacturers and developers to upgrade to more expensive hardware and bigger budgets for the sole reason of making a profit from selling their middleware. They have no interest in what is good for gaming as a whole. To this day I still believe most current gen games could have been done with half the power or less and still be essentially the same experience.
edit: You know all this Rol. Sometimes I think you just like to be argumentative for no good reason.

Guess you're right... I should learn to be more cautious when posing after just waking up

You better cross me out on your hate list. I didn't like your weird tomato post from a few weeks back either. Don't force me to make a thread to mock you. I could write something like "Why Endless Ocean 2 is the worst 2D platformer ever". The reason? Way too many water levels. |
what tomato post??
