Forums - Sales - Eight Predictions for '08

This is another "expert" prediction.. this time from yahoo's front page. it's nothing we haven't seen before.. basically ps3 will gain ground because it has the most "room for growth" which is a bullshit argument if i've ever heard one, the wii will fail and GTA4 will be successful. Basically, my point of posting this is that there are many here on VGChartz who would be better off holding the job of this jackass.. anyway..

Red Rings of Death. 'Ban'hunt. Wii droughts. Last year was a crazy one for gamers, filled with controversies, console wars and more amazing games than we could reasonably afford to play. We've already pointed out some of the coming year's biggest releases, but what else might gamers expect? What unforeseen events will define video games in 08? With the help of some tarot cards, a few unsubstantiated rumors and a time-traveling DeLorean, we summon our inner Nostradamus and present eight possible outcomes for the year ahead.

1. The PS3 will gain ground. Really.

Stop laughing - we're being serious. After a pretty dismal year, Sony is poised to snatch back a significant chunk of the market share it unwittingly handed over to Microsoft and Nintendo. Why would we make such an outlandish claim? Simple: compared to the 360 and the Wii, the PS3 has the most room for growth and the tastiest morsels left on the post-holiday plate.

The launch of Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet will give PS3 users two more mega-exclusives worth bragging about (until MGS eventually makes it to the 360, Konami's denials be damned), and 2008 promises to be the year Sony will finally release its much-ballyhooed and oft-delayed Home network. Sure, Microsoft still has GTA IV, and Nintendo will rule the roost early with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but the rest of the year is up for grabs. Since they're the most desperate, Sony's hand will move the fastest.

so: nintendo will rule the beginning, everything else is for grabs and since sony is desperate they will win?

LOL pretty much... Its amazing that people still predict failure for a product (Wii) which has had phenomenal success for two Christmases.. All those people are going to want to buy games and companies will release good games for Wii. Its a cycle, like ps2.

Hm, #2 reminded me of a scene from Life of Brian...

Reg: All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Attendee: Brought peace?

I agree that the Wii software lineup past Q1 is weak, but that won't stop it's momentum.

That list has some pretty obvious stuff, doesn't really deserve any special attention.

Never mind exclusive, lets see which console they are coming on, though many would disagree with list:

PS3: 5

360: 4

Wii: 2

basically, they have 3 arguments :

LBP MGS4 and GTA4

LBP : it is 95% online title, it CANT attract casual gamer like a Wiisport game.
LBP is not a party game. You have to spend time on it. The game will not bomb but it will not be a massive system seller.

MGS4 : since I see a 1 year exclusivity for the PS3, the potential release on the Xbox360 is not a problem.
BUT the game sell mostly to hardcore MGS4 fan and we dont know how many already have an PS3 ...
MGS4 may move A LOT of system if it succeed to get some amazing review +95%.
If it is not the case, it will stay a niche game.

GTA4 : since the game is multiplateform and since I dont see WHY the PS3 would have anything superior compared to the Xbox60, the game should move more Xbox360 since the Xbox360 is cheaper and will have more content.

Time to Work !

yes the PS3 has a lot of very anticipated games
yes many "online" gamers dont care about Wii games

but even without lot of games, even with just Wiisport, the Wii would sell to the mass market.

People dont buy the console for the games, they buy the console for the console itself (Wiimote concept) and because it is cheap.

Time to Work !

But what happens after that? Other than Mario Kart Wii, there's nothing particularly exciting lined up to keep those elusive Wiis from collecting dust. Beyond massive first-party gems like Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime, the current software lineup is pretty thin and the upcoming Wii release list is comparatively weak. We're expecting a slew of new first-party announcements come the E3 convention in July, but that might be just enough time for the competition to catch up.

This is pretty stupid. How is the rest of the year "weak," exactly, when no one actually knows what the rest of the '08 lineup is? Nintendo - and select 3rd parties, have purposely kept that under wraps. They're basically assuming. Also, I'm not sure how the competition is supposed to "catch up" by E3, unless they can developed and release several "mega hits" in under 90 days nothing at E3 should be having a significant instant impact on all 3 consoles lineups.
