Forums - Nintendo - Retro Studios Recruiting Ex-Zipper Interactive Employees

Great news.

Anyone else hoping for a new IP? I wouldn't mind if it's a new 3D Metroid but a new IP from all these new and old guys would be awesome.

The1 I am pretty positive that Retro is done with Metroid. The studios creators and initial staff were always into being creative always doing new things. They really liked working on Metroid but I get the feeling once they finished the third installment that they wanted to go onto other things. They have now done Donkey Kong and I am not sure they will return to that series either, without going 3D I can't see the studio satisfying its need to create new games and work on new content. Their cooperation on MK7 shows that Retro is still interested in core Nintendo IP, but one must not forget their past and the reason Nintendo acquired them in the first place. The studio showed their potential to develop exclusive new IP and Nintendo decided to snap them up and mold the studio into a super power.

My bet is that Retro has multiple projects currently in the works. I am hoping that at least one of those is a new IP and I don't think I will be dissapointed. However I am also pretty confident that Retro is handling another of Nintendo's core properties.

My best bet would be Star Fox. Nintendo hasn't had a main installment in the series in a long time. No the re-release of SF64 does not count. Rare handled the IP last (As far as internal studios go) and If I had to put money on it I'd give it 70% odds that Retro is working on Star Fox.

In fact we have heard rumors that Star Fox is coming to WiiU and it would make a ton of sense that Retro would be the studio tasked with its return. Can anyone think of another IP that would suite Retrospective MO? I wouldn't be surprised if Retro also borrowed some of the game play ideas from Assault and that the Zipper interactive guys could be playing a role in making sure that goes well.

But I do want to see a Retro IP, something new and fresh, something that a Japanese studio simply wouldn't make. Whether that be a ground breaking Halo killing FPS or an RTS or even an open world Prototype style In Famous killer. I would love to see Retro bring us something fresh that gives Nintendo another product they don't already master. Wouldn't mind seeing Nintendo getting us some love from Silicon Knights either. Nintendo needs some western titles this generation!

I see JC is back, missed those eye watering walls of text.

Good to hear that people are getting their jobs back, although I am a bit skeptical as they were made redundant in the first place.. And were not rehired for any other internal Sony studio.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

NotStan how do you know they weren't offered positions at another Sony studio? Nintendo would have known about Sony's intentions to close the studio as fast as we did if not earlier and would have likely approached the best individuals available and offered them jobs.

Nintendo started approaching AAA class talent from studios all over the globe to work at Retro. They are turning the studio into a powerhouse.

Remember UbiSoft and EA's staff war in Montréal fact is publishers and developers have been stealing away staff members as fast as they possibly can. Give them the opportunity and I am 100% positive they will jump for it.

JC you are speculating more than a new-age'er trying to amalgamate pseudo-science and pseudo-religion.

Seriously, the confidence with which you say Retro won't make another Metroid game is a little off-putting. Not only would it be a perfect fit for an HD console, but they are more qualified than any other studio to do so.

And they are building 4 studios!? Whaa?

I must say I'm not into your mode of presentation here.
