Forums - Nintendo - So it's been 2 years since PokeNet closed down...

Many people cry out for a Pokemon MMO- but little do they know that a completely free-to-play Pokemon MMO already existed 2-3 years ago in the form of Pokemon Global, later changed to PokeNet.

It featured complete, accurate maps of the Johto and Kanto regions - and plans to expand to every region eventually - with complete battling and trading compatablity. Gym battles, shops, wild encounters... it was all there, and the players loved it!

Unfortunately, exactly 2 years ago today on April 1st 2010, the owners of PokeNet recieved a Cease and Desist order from Nintendo. They thought they'd be allowed to keep running it, since they made no money at all from the game- not even from donations. Alas, they had to shut the game down. We all thought that it was an April Fools joke- but instead it was simply a horribly timed disaster for the online Pokemon community.

However, all hope is not lost. Some of the original developers decided to make their own game, entirely from scratch - it is still very much in progress (there is no playable form of the game yet), but there is still a number of people waiting for this Pokemon-like MMO, and I wanted to show the developers that there was still a reason for their efforts: this isn't an advertisement by any means, since I'm not at all involved in the development in Evocri (the aforementioned game that took over PokeNet), but I encourage you to sign up to this website http://www.evocri.com/forums/index.php" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.evocri.com/forums/index.php and post a quick message on the welcome board to say hello :p (the community is pretty much all gone now, so it'd be nice to see messages in that forum again- despite this, the admins still check for messages every day).

Aside from this- do you think that Nintendo will ever release a Pokemon MMO? If they did, would you subscribe?

Around the Network

Gamefreak seem to place a strong emphasis on Pokemon being a purely handheld experience. That aside I wouldn't be surprised If Nintendo were to announce some sort of online multiplayer Pokemon title either for the 3DS or Wii U. It will probably be a different creature from the standard 'MMORPG', something like Monster Hunter with lobbies perhaps where you can group up for 3v3 battles or quests or something along those lines anyway.

This guy is already making a Pokemon MMO, I've been part of a stress test for it. Nowhere near finished but very promising.

Gamefreak continue to astound with their inability to evolve the franchise. As long as it sells, I guess.

April Fools Thread?

@ Saladise

I want a fully realized 3D MMO. Not some old 2D version. Enough with the gameboy like graphics. We deserve better, after all of these years. Pokemon park and pokemon park 2 do not count and neither do the Stadiums or colosseums.

Why does it have to be an MMO? Why can't it just be a Pokemon RPG (Like we have now) but with 3D graphics? I hate MMO's and I would never sign up to one even if it's official by Game Freak and The Pokemon Co. Neither would a lot of the Pokemon Fans, it would be a bad move to go away from their RPG formula.

We all thought that PokeNet shutting down was an April Fools joke, since it happened on April 1st- but unfortunately it was no joke :(

I think a 3D MMO would be really interesting, especially if it was on WiiU
