Wasn't the same film. Not everyone who liked Alien would like Aliens and vice versa (I only like Aliens). Going and doing a new thing with the same branding and some superficial elements and then calling it a successor is exactly what I am against. See also Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. I liked both, but I didn't like how 3D replaced 2D for so many years until they went back to having both in parallel. This is irrespective of the quality of the new entry.
Yes, it is possible to break with a series and do something better (like Aliens) but that does not mean you SHOULD do it, or that the replacement should be declared how things should be. I'm specifically arguing against the attitude that shows must evolve, because I don't believe show-writing past the pilot is a creative process - it is a logical one.
