Runa216 said: Why is it that there seems to be such a powerful desire to HATE ponies and bronies? Like, not just dislike, but straight up HATE. As though the brony community shat in someone's cornflakes. Last night I was chatting with a friend of mine, who said his hands hurt because he was doing some crafting for something. I asked what it was, if it was for a LARP or something, and he said it was for costuming. I was like "Oh cool, cosplay. My bro's going as a male version of Applejack later in the year." And that's all I said. he was like "Eww". so I asked. "Not a fan I presume?" To which he responds, "Yeah.. The whole MLP fad fills me with burning fire and rage.", I say my "I don't understand why people feel the need to actively hate it. Not like the show has done something offensive or hurtful." So he says, and I'm paraphrasing a bit here to edit out the cusswords, "I'm so sick of that show. you know what it's like if one person wears a funny hat, then everyone else wears it just for the lulz or to get attention? It's like that. It's stupid, and that's all there is to it. if you're the kind of person who has to tell everyone that you're a brony, get bent." and I'm like...wait, what? so apparently every brony in the world is just doing it for the lulz? Couldn't possibly be because they legitimately like it? He doesn't care for it, and therefore that means that nobody could like it? I told him straight up he was wrong (about it just being a fandom for the lulz), and he goes on the offensive about how I have no right to squash his opinion, or how I'm always so defensive, and he's 'done with this conversation' while conveniently having to have the last word...I mean, what is wrong with people? If someone doesn't LIKE the show, I get that; it's girly and saccharine, it's about a lot of prissy little princess stuff like fashion and sharing, but it's also about comraderie, it's about learning how to interact with others. It's a well animated show with great writing, great characters, and a bunch of easter eggs that are certainly not for kids or little girls. I tell him this and he's like "Don't care, I have my opinion, you have yours, and I'm not reading t hat block of text, so stop wasting your time." See, the issue here is that he asserted something HE thought was the truth, and got aggressive when I told him it wasn't the truth. If this was a matter of "I don't like the show" or even "I just don't see what people like in it", I'd ignore it likeI do any other non-fan, but he had to basically insult me and every other brony by telling us we don't like the show and are doing it for attention, and he couldn't understand why I'd be a little pissed off about that? What's with the irrational hatred of the show? I've never met a pushy brony, only ever people who said "Give it a shot, watch it before saying you hate it." Which is, quite frankly, how ANY friend should go about getting another friend to share interests. Your thoughts? Also, this relates directly to an old quote I penned back when Avatar came out: "The amount of irrational hatred any form of entertainment receives is directly related to its popularity." |
