Forums - General Discussion - VGChartz's Official My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic thread!

I think that everyone who was going to like MLP already does at this point, and that's fine. Do we really need ponies to rule the Earth? Mainstream media not being quality is precisely why ponies are so good, I don't feel the need to be accepted by them.

@Runa Are you sure someone who will hold that kind of opinion and refuse to hear anything against it is your friend? Seems like he would also be intolerant on wider issues.

Why is it that there seems to be such a powerful desire to HATE ponies and bronies? Like, not just dislike, but straight up HATE. As though the brony community shat in someone's cornflakes.

Last night I was chatting with a friend of mine, who said his hands hurt because he was doing some crafting for something. I asked what it was, if it was for a LARP or something, and he said it was for costuming. I was like "Oh cool, cosplay. My bro's going as a male version of Applejack later in the year." And that's all I said. he was like "Eww". so I asked. "Not a fan I presume?"

To which he responds, "Yeah.. The whole MLP fad fills me with burning fire and rage.", I say my "I don't understand why people feel the need to actively hate it. Not like the show has done something offensive or hurtful." So he says, and I'm paraphrasing a bit here to edit out the cusswords, "I'm so sick of that show. you know what it's like if one person wears a funny hat, then everyone else wears it just for the lulz or to get attention? It's like that. It's stupid, and that's all there is to it. if you're the kind of person who has to tell everyone that you're a brony, get bent."

and I'm like...wait, what? so apparently every brony in the world is just doing it for the lulz? Couldn't possibly be because they legitimately like it? He doesn't care for it, and therefore that means that nobody could like it? I told him straight up he was wrong (about it just being a fandom for the lulz), and he goes on the offensive about how I have no right to squash his opinion, or how I'm always so defensive, and he's 'done with this conversation' while conveniently having to have the last word...I mean, what is wrong with people? If someone doesn't LIKE the show, I get that; it's girly and saccharine, it's about a lot of prissy little princess stuff like fashion and sharing, but it's also about comraderie, it's about learning how to interact with others. It's a well animated show with great writing, great characters, and a bunch of easter eggs that are certainly not for kids or little girls. I tell him this and he's like "Don't care, I have my opinion, you have yours, and I'm not reading t hat block of text, so stop wasting your time."

See, the issue here is that he asserted something HE thought was the truth, and got aggressive when I told him it wasn't the truth. If this was a matter of "I don't like the show" or even "I just don't see what people like in it", I'd ignore it likeI do any other non-fan, but he had to basically insult me and every other brony by telling us we don't like the show and are doing it for attention, and he couldn't understand why I'd be a little pissed off about that?

What's with the irrational hatred of the show? I've never met a pushy brony, only ever people who said "Give it a shot, watch it before saying you hate it." Which is, quite frankly, how ANY friend should go about getting another friend to share interests.

Your thoughts?

Also, this relates directly to an old quote I penned back when Avatar came out: "The amount of irrational hatred any form of entertainment receives is directly related to its popularity."

I do think people who don't get that the show is genuinely, stand-on-its-own-four-hooves good think that this is just some sort of ironic internet hipster thing, so the hate that bronies get is similar to the hate that apple fans get, where the popularity of the item is perceived by others to be derived purely from hipster appeal.

Plus in the case of Bronies there are those who think we're all pedophiles, which is a separate kettle of fish

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

That quote at the end is great, applies to so many things. Anyway, as to the hate thing, in some cases (obviously not all cases, but this is what it was like with me), I knew from the start there was a chance I would like it and I hated knowing that. It went against everything I knew so I had to cover it by telling myself it was a bad problem that only horrible people that thought they were cool watched. I ofc failed in that regard but am really happy I did. Being a brony is great and it has genuinely made me happy to come to this thread on multiple occasions.

Basically I think it comes down to society telling them it was wrong and thus they must hate these people that like it because they are going against what society has told them is right.

Peer pressure is one of the worst curses evolution left us with.

Well, I don't know your friend, so I have to ask whether it might be just that he's one of those people with a mindset like "my opinion is fact; your opposite opinion is a personal attack on my worldview".  If you could have gotten a much more reasonable exchange out of him discussing, say, abortion or gay marriage (although those might not be good examples of hot button issues in your socialist paradise ), then yeah I guess MLP-specific hate might be what's going on there

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

life would be so awesome if everyone saw eye to eye on the issue of MLP. It wasn't long ago when I... even you were sorta kinda like the person you described.

Pretty good, it's impressive that you are able to draw original art. It took me 4 hours to draw a picture of Pinkie Pie and it wasn't even original. XP Maybe you should give animations a try?

Anyways, who's Rainbow Dash supposed to be a parody of in this pic? I know Fluttershy is Wonder Woman (I think), it's just Rainbow Dash. I know I've seen that costume before and it's annoying me that I can't figure it out. >_< It's offical art btw for the comic:

I don't expext everyone to like it...I understand the show's tone and subject matter isn't for everyone...but is it so much to ask NOT to be treated like dirt just because I like it?  is it so much to ask that people not hate it without good reason?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having your own take in your own art. It gives you your own style. I would like to see that drawing of yours.

I have not the time or resources to do animation unfortunately. I'm only an average still image artist :P but I'm flattered.

For Rainbow, I believe she's Atom Smasher from DC universe. And I only figured it out because of the atom symbol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom_Smasher_%28DC_Comics%29
