Forums - Gaming - iPad 3 announcement in one hour

At 10 AM Pacific time, Apple will announce the third generation iPad. Here are some liveblogs covering the event:

Here's a little rumour rundown on what to expect:

Screen resolution doubled to 2048 x 1536 - This one is pretty much a lock. One rumour site even got their hands on a panel with the right aspect ratio and pixel density to be for the next iPad.

Named "iPad HD" - HD is overused and abused, but this device would have a much better claim to the title than all the iPad apps in 2010 which had "HD" appended to the name to distinguish them from iPhone apps.

CPU/GPU boost - Some say it'll be the A5X, others the A6. Apple seems to have two unreleased SoCs in development. Whether the CPU is a juiced up dual-core Cortex A9 or a quad-core A15, you can be sure that the GPU will have at least four times the power of the iPad 2 to support that monster screen resolution. Also, expect this to be the first iDevice with a gig of RAM, because huge images require huge memory.

LTE - I give this one 50/50. It's possible that Apple has a chipset that's flexible and low-power enough that they'll want to include LTE, but it's also possible that they'll stick with the more broadly compatible and power efficient 3G standard for another year. Since a substantial majority of iPads sold are wifi-only, I don't really see this as a big deal.

Slightly thicker - Rumour has it that the IGZO display and the battery required to drive it will take up a little more space, making this iPad less than a millimeter thicker than the 2.

Better camera - Rumours say it might include the iPhone 4S camera module. I'm doubtful, because the iPad is thinner than the iPhone, and that impacts what kind of camera you can fit inside. Still, it's hard to imagine the camera getting any worse, so I expect a better camera, but not one as nice as the 4S.

New software - Just a 5.1 iOS release, but Apple might choose to include a nifty new feature or two with it. There's also a good chance that Apple will move another of their desktop apps over to iOS, since iWork, iMovie, and Garageband have all been launched alongside iOS device launches. Probably iPhoto is next, or perhaps a revamped iWeb linked up to iCloud. (even i'M getting sick of the iNames)

Apple TV - Apple TV stock has been drying up, suggesting some kind of new TV product is coming. Many are expecting Apple to launch a full-power Apple smart TV, but I'm still skeptical of the value prospect behind selling TV displays. It's a cutthroat market with razor-thin margins. I think Apple might just update their little black box to be littler and beefier.

I never understood announcements for announcements. If the thing has already been said to exist, then hasn't it been announced? That is the meaning of 'announcement' right?

It's been said by the rumour mill to exist. Nothing has been officially announced. We know it's the iPad 3 because the time of year is right and the event invitation includes a picture of an iPad.

last year no tablets even came close to IPAD 2's sales, it will be interesting to see how the others do this year. I am rooting for Kindle fire 2.

According to rumors it will look something like this.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Wow, that's gorgeous! And so unexpected, too!

Lol, in all seriousness, I am quite looking forward to finding out the details about the new iPad.
