Pretty much.

In cinema, what the viewer can't see often invokes a greater response than to what is revealed in frame.

This game relies upon any innate feelings of claustrophobia and achluophobia (fear of the dark) within the player, cleverly enhanced by the use of a horror soundtrack that does the commonly used low grating rumble to instant crescendo change in volume.

It's actually pretty interesting to see how effectively something like this can evoke an emotional response with so little input and such limited game resources.
