I'm nothing like my family either, but I do like them.
I have lived abroad since I'm 18 (7 years) and I'm gonna stay abroad for some more years at least, whereas they are very local kind of people, they're a bit ignorant of other lifestyles and such. Not my mum, my mum's intelligent, has two degrees and a masters and has also lived abroad. But people like my uncles an aunts, my grandma...
However, they wouldn't hate me for having different beliefs or anything. Most of my family is atheist, while my grandma, uncle and aunt are religious (not going-to-church kind of religious, but they believe). We have right wing people, left wing people... there are plenty of arguments (in the sense of debates) while having lunch, etc. But in the end we accept each other as we are.
I have a foreign couple and so does my mum, and my family just accepted it. My grandma was in a bit of a shock when she learnt my mum's boyfriend was black, but she just keeps her thoughts to herself and acts normal with her. My fiancée is Japanese and my uncle and aunt can't tell the difference between Japan and China, so they asked her if she eats dog... but they're just ignorant, once they know her they like her a lot and they like boasting about it to other people (having a Japanese in the family), like it's a curious thing.
If I suddenly realised I was gay and I told my family, I would raise a few eyebrows and create some uncomfortable silences, but I know it would be the same, they would just shut up and accept it (my mum wouldn't even raise an eyebrow, she's very open minded).
So yeah, they are very different, sometimes ignorant. But in the end we overlook whatever thing we may consider weird to stick together, there would never be a family feud for something as simple as a personal choice or a trait of personality.
