Forums - Sony Discussion - The Playstation Vita should just be a smartphone. Sony should pull out of handheld gaming.

I like the idea of the PSV and PSP, but honestly, Sony should make a PSV phone alongside the PSV. After all the PSP Go was actually based off the same tech and system as the Sony Xveria Play. Smartphones are capable enough to play games like this, it might take a bit of time to microsize the tech and make it affordable to have a smartphone AND PSV, but hey.

Without that type of merging of branches, I won't buy a PSV until it's about replaced. However I might buy one if it's available as a phone (and play it since I have it with me all the time), when my contract expires.

I don't want no phone in my Vita. It will only bring up costs.
I want a dedicated gaming handheld with no useless extras. This is why I am not interested in the 3G model.

To answer the thread title:

No. Yes.

So you do think it would be a great idea then, you're just saying no because you want sony to fail and exit the handheld gaming market.

No. Yes.

I somewhat agree. Now that I see that PSV is getting things like Netflix, Facebook and Hulu apps right out of the gate, it is clear that Sony had a chance to create something special here. Their own unified ecosystem...

They actually should have kept quiet about it being a phone and at the very last minute announced that it is a phone on top of a kickass gaming device. It would have caught everyone off guard and generated a huge buzz. As things are, it still may lay a nice foundation of apps and games for future phones and/or consoles...but a chance was missed with PSV for sure.

He pretends that people were calling for Sony pulling the plug on the PSP in 2005. This has nothing to do with the PS3.

Of course, in 2005 the general tone was that Nintendo will be done for good in the handheld business.

At least you got it. Though Nintendo's handheld business was what was carrying them back in 2005.

Ugh. If sony pulled out of the handheld market i'd have no reason to play mobile games. I refuse to buy that dual screen 3d monstrosity and iOS/android games are some of the worst of the worst you could possibly play.

A true Playstation phone would have some pretty good appeal, even including me. However I'm addicted to proper QWERTY keyboards on my smartphone (i.e. not touchscreen QWERTY) so without that I won't really be in the market for a PSphone.

I think WP7 (8?) will likely come out with a phone that does a controller slider that plays Xbox360 games, some time after the 720 comes out.

it seemed obvious from the get go to me that the PS Vita would eventually release and merge into the smart phone market while still keeping its identity to deliver better quality game experiences than its 99 cent counterparts (dedicated controls, bigger budget games, PSN (SEN))

Sony acquired Ericsson.....Check
Sony implemented a unique UI with similar design philosophy to a tablet/smartphone.........Check
A device that can go all digital.....Check
Current models deliver 3g and stress social functionality.....Check

I dont see how you could not come to the conclusion that PS Vita will eventually release a smartphone design along with a wifii only design (like iPhone/iPod).... it will probably be reminiscent of the slider design that was leaked from a dev kit:

Remember this??

When the slider goes down it acts just like your normal smartphone.....when the slider goes up it turns into your dedicated portable game console. Best of both worlds, and it would justify the current price tag to many

My guess is it's coming within 8 - 14 months $199 with contract OR $199 for a wifii only model with no phone functionality. depending on how the PS Vita does in the West, and how soon sony can improve the battery efficieny and implement a lightning fast 4G LTE antenna that will allow for fast enough speeds to play online wherever you are.

It would only be the natural expansion...remember Apple went from ipod ->iphone->ipod->ipad, dont see why sony and the ps vita cant do the same.

This design would not work because of the front and rear touchscreen/Pads.  Sony just seems to continue to make mistakes.  Hopefully the new CEO will help a lot.  Which he seems like he can for sure

In order for it to be a phone, its form factor would need to be redesigned.
On top of that, the current size is too big to be a phone.

They were on the right track with the slider style with PSP Go. They got burnt too hard to continue that route, I suppose.
