So, Sony is patenting Aliens?

No Sony are aliens. This was their first draft drawing of what they actually look like, and they forgot to do a public version drawing that looked like humans. They've accidentally exposed their true natures.

I woulda thought they could go for a cheap 3D option and just duct tape 2 PSEyes together. After all, I can see in 3D fine and I don't need to shoot out no thousands of infrared dots to get a 3D view of the world.

Nobody owns depth detection concept. MS owns a custom version of a clever implementation designed originally by a 3rd party. If I were Sony, I'd try to reduce costs using a single RGB+IR camera instead of two separed RGB and IR ones like Kinect. I'd also try something different from IR pattern projection and detection. Let's not forget that depth detection through the PSMove Dildo saves Sony additional efforts in many cases, but a camera with better depth detection is necessary if Sony doesn't want Kinect to have almost the exclusive for hands-free motion detection games. MS needs a stick for some games, Sony and Nintendo need an advanced depth detection camera for some others, and shame on Ninty and 3rd parties for not having developed more games for Balance Board, as for skiing, snowbording, yoga and some other sports and fitness games, posture and pressure detection are better than camera and/or stick based motion detection (BB + a stick inserted in a handlebar could be the definitive control scheme for bike simulation at an acceptable cost, without having to buy some expensive, niche and cumbersome bike-shaped input device)

They look nothing like that. Here's what they look like:

Why do people keep suggesting this is a new camera? It's not. Sony is patenting a method for developing a 3D user interface. There is nothing new about the camera technolgy that the current PS Eye doesn't already have.

It's not a Kinect clone, it's not even near the capability of Kinect, it's a 3D interface via a depth sensing camera. However, at near range the PS Eye can within a certain plane (as the patent suggests) depth through the RGB camera. It already does this.

It's a new method for a 3D interface, not a camera.

these copy figures again....

yeah, don't be fooled, it is not kinect, like move wasn't wii remote

WTF Sony

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Sony really doesn't get the credit they deserve when it comes to motion control . ALL this stuff that's popular this gen was done on the ps2 with the eyetoy. Motion controlled dancing, fitness, sports mini-game collections, party mini-game collections etc. were ALL on ps2. Sony pioneered this stuff selling over 10 million eyetoys.

And just to say something about the whole wii mote/ move thing as well cause you NEVER hear the truth and i'm sick and tired of self righteous, know-nothing nintendo fans. First of all XAVIX did it first NOT nintendo. A full 2 years before the wii came out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH9u0eKgytc

Also consider wii motion plus. How is it an improvement over the vanilla wii mote? They added a gyroscope... the same tech used in the ps3 six axis for years.

your wasting your breath. a circle is 360 degrees and thats all we've been doing this gen. by restating the facts. don't break your neck trying, cause mine already hurts. their is already a vid on G4tv, an article on GI, and many youtube vid's, along with millions of threads on vgc showing proof of everything you've just said but sarcasm and choosing to ignore these facts is the problem.

Exactly!! Everyone on this thread needs to read this and shut up!

i forgot to mention the GTTV video.

Meh. I'm not convinced this will even see the light of day. How many patents does Sony make per year? And furthermore, why is it assumed that Sony are patenting it for a video game system? Computers and TV's are starting to utilize camera's for new purposes.

This. The Playstation mention of this patent was just one small part of the whole. This technology will probably mainly be used for smart TV's, if anything.

It's obviously a Mochi fertility goddess. Duh!

A flat chested anatomically incorrect Goddess?  Unless you are referring to the fertility  godess of the Rice Cake.

I apologize. It's the Semitic goddess Astarte, an adaptation of the of the Sumerian-Babylonian goddess Ishtar.

I'm gonna stick with alien. Though them goddesses probably were aliens, like her head isn't even attached to her body in that depiction.
