Forums - Sales - Current-gen megahits (5m+ sales) by genre

I think 'Misc' groups together some quite distinct genres - I'd say Mario Party and Zumba Fitness are less alike than some games that belong to separate categories.

Going back to why the initial focus on 5m+ sellers, it was also partly because of the fraction of total software sold that these games account for. Now obviously Wii Sports (as an almost-ubiquitous bundle) accounts for a significant fraction of Wii software sold, but even with that, the data shows that whatever genre you want to say it belongs to accounts for a lower fraction of Wii software sold than FPSes on the 360 (and possibly PS3). In fact, CoD alone accounts for a comparably significant fraction of HD software.

Castle crashers is considered a platformer?

Limbo? Just no.

Even Braid is a stretch.

It's perfectly fine, that's the whole point of his thread, to say Wii has a more diverse library than PS360, what are we suppose to just say 'yes it does' That's what you're expecting.

If you agree he's wrong to say that then it's daft you expect people to just come in and agree.

I never said I expect people to agree that Wii has a much more diverse library than it's competitors (Even if, IMO, it is more diverse than 360's ) but the fact is this thread is about the 5 million milestone, and people are trying to negate that.

Also, there was no intention in the OP to suggest the Wii has a more diverse library - sales are irrelevant to that. The OP was simply designed to challenge a comment made in another thread - that, based on the wii games that had sold 20m+, Wii owners had the least diverse taste in games. To infer anything else from the OP is to misinterpret the OP.

I'm not talking about how much they earn but their reach. Digital has a limit far below what retail is, so 1m on XBLA/PSN is equivlent to say 3m at retail, I dunno that's just a guess, you get the idea though.

My main point is, Wii doesn't have any genre's thriving online that it doesn't have at retail. PSN and XBLA do.

But that's mainly because the Xbox 360 and PS3 have a smaller number of genres that are thriving at retail, so how's that really a disadvantage for the Wii?

What's even more funny is that the only platformers that are successful at retail on the HD consoles are first party games while the successful FPS games on the Wii are third party titles.

No they don't? Especially these days, the only genres doing well on Wii are Dance and Fitness.

Castle Crashers is a Beat'em up, not a platformer. Braid and Limbo ARE platformers though.

Yes, they do.

This thread is about the entire lifecycles of the seventh gen home consoles, so let's stick with this.

Agree to disagree, now, lifetime, the HD consoles are above and beyond Wii's diversity. Pretty much zero there to entertain the core gamer.

You can't jump in Castle Crashers. There are no platforms in Castle Crashers. It isn't a platformer.

Braid has platforming elements but it's mostly a puzzle game.

Limbo is what I would call a platformer.

Who are you to say so?

I'm not gonna make a list, but just you don't like Nintendo's first party, that doesn't make you a core gamer.
