360 still has a higher install base overall.

Keep trying Sony.

What so sales don't matter, it's now the install base? Wow.. Desperate?

tiny market where Sony decided to burn any profits by buying market share, PS3's were routinely given away.

its the equivalent of giving away about 2.8m PS3's in the US.

its amazing you bring that up,yet you had no issue with MS giving away Xboxes for buying laptop in the Us or cellphone in the UK.

Guess how I got my PS3?  free with a phone.... check my post history.

The UK phone market has that for all consoles.  Oh and guess what the deal on amazon was for vaio laptops last year... yep.. a free PS3, these all pale into insignifance to the Aus deal.

These types of deals are copmmon, but they are all small beer compared to the AUS Sony TV deal.  It is 14% of the ps3 "sold" there.

So what, that's my point. At least they don't hide it. Everyone buys markeshare'. There was no need for your comment at all.

I think here there is... 14% is exceptional.  Like I said, its the equivalent of 2.8m give away PS3s in the US.

and Im not sure how you can hide giveaways...

what are the numbers for how many Xbox were  giving away last year in the US or UK due to promotions?

Install base is a result from sales. But your right.

360 still has more shipped and higher install base then PS3 lifetime.

PS3 is the one clawing its way from 3rd place, no desperation from 360 camp :)

Seriously?

looks like MS tried to spin it a bit as well by saying they were the best selling during the holiday season....which doesn't translate into them winning 2011.

Some numbers from these claims would be nice.

Actually, they did win. You can't dispute MS doing better in term of being profitable.

Wasn't the gamecube nintendo more profitable than the ps2 sony in a year or two? Cuz if I remember correctly, the ps2 was being sold at a loss, unlike the gamecube. Seece posted an article last year that showed this (I may be wrong though).

no one knows for sure as the finacials aren't broken down enough, may or may not be true as you wrote it.  nintendo was more profitable then sony's game division though but how much of that was gameboy is unclear..

nobody knows... just like they dont know how many PS3's were gven away in similar deals.

Its probably insignificant as a % and is probably why in this case it has been mentioned due to the size of it.

look if you dont think 14% is a remarkable giveaway rate then fine, but I do... I dont want to argue about it.

In the US we undertracked that month by around 200-300k (the month NPD posted ~550k) to which i remember the source attributing it primarily to the xbox give-a-way not being considered here.   so there is your ballpark for what it's worth.  I forget the exact amount we undertracked but someone could find that NPD thread if they were so inclined.

PS3 outsold 360 lifetime in Australia last year.... in 2010 both tied with 1.1m... and 2011 PS3 sold more consoles.

14% does sound like a high giveaway rate. When was this said?

Australia market is small compared to Japan... the fastest selling console there is Wii surpassing the 2 million units sold mark in 2010 (47 months to do that).

The lifetime figure for Wii today is ~2.3m (PS2 sold 2.6m).
