This back and forth thing about which console won 2011 is getting tiresome.

Assuming you mean "sold to consumers" as MS definately won the shipped battle for 2011.  I know what you mean.  I'm putting that on ice until we see Q1 shippments and whether we see adjustments.  If MS ships close to normal Q1 then personally I'm going to assume 360 sold more to consumers, if they ship below normal levels then I'll assume Sony won sold due to overstocking of 360 in US for December.

No idea where VG numbers will settle at this point.

Well, they're going to be down over last year for sure, as they were replenishing the channel. They normally ship in the 1.5 - 1.7m in Q1, not 2.7 they did last year.

Good point - forgot they had to rebuild stock more last year.  That's going to make it a bit trickier to estimate.

Ah hell - I'm going to give it to MS personally until I see/hear otherwise.  They shipped more and even assuming retailers over-ordered (based on November spike plus missing sales last year) there's a fair chance MS still sold more to consumers or it was the dreaded statistical tie.

TBH next to Sony's overall position which one sold a couple of hundred K more to consumers seems a fairly minor distinction.  Both sold well and MS pulled off a great holiday performance to edge the year (at least on shipped) - but Sony's decent PS3 performance simply pales next to the bigger challenges the company is facing.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Gamespot link provided in OP tells

"Sony's Consumer Products & Services division--which includes the PlayStation business as well as TVs, home audio, cameras, and personal electronics--suffered an operating loss of ¥85.7 billion (US$1.1 billion)"

Its a shame Sony lumped PS in with all those unsuccessful divisions. Really makes PS look more unsuccessful compared to MS and Nintendo. Then again, part of it could be due to Vita launch costs.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Sony shipped 7.6 million of PSP in 2011, not 5.2 million... What happened here?

I personally can't believe 360 won 2011. I seriosuly, seriously thought 360 would be last place by the end of it. PS3 exclusive, the price cut, and Europe/Japan edge would surely put PS3 over the top.

Guess NA and Kinect were bigger factors then any of us expected.

US is arguably the largest videogame market, and in that market the Microsoft brand is its strongest at the moment. So I'm not that surprised. Considering a good portion of those units were Kinect bundles, it seems Microsoft have now struck gold like Nintendo once did by tapping into that casual gamer market goldmine. I just hope they don't alienate the core and find a good balance.

And people say NA /= world.

It isn't...but it sure is the biggest and most relevant part of it (from a gaming sense).

its not just NA, 360 does pretty damn good in Europe, people just try to denie that, 360 has 20M install base on Europe vs 23M Ps3. The gap isnt that huge. Ofc UK is pretty big but 360 does quite well in EU. Also Australia,  New Zealand, Hong Kong, India, Latin America and Mexico are markets pretty big for 360 and Console is still growing there.

Even here in Portugal the Console is showing growth and loads of Live new members.

Psp aint dead yet...

In Japan.

Well looks like the one who needs more a new console is Sony instead of Microsoft

This gen is just full of surprises.

This only verifies what we knew all along (Xbox 360 greater shipments). The real issues were "sold to consumers" and "how many are still on shelves by the end of 2011." And the way it stands, we're probably not going to accurately know that number, ever. But both consoles appear to be selling quite well regardless. I'm just glad niche titles can still survive in this current console generation regardless of the losses Sony is taking. This is what makes gaming what it is.

I am here to wait for those people who didn't believe XBOX360 won 2011. Now MS & SONY FY report provided us all the information: 14.9M of XBOX360 and 14.1M of PS3 in CY2011. Now everyone here would 100% know who won 2011.

hahahahahahha~~~~!!!!!!
