Forums - Microsoft - Crackle and CinemaNow apps join Xbox Live today

Shacknews

Two more entertainment apps are available to download off Xbox Live today: the Crackle app from Sony Pictures and CinemaNow from Best Buy.

CinemaNow allows Xbox Live Gold members to buy and rent movies and TV shows. (Why anyone would do this instead of using the Zune Marketplace, we're not entirely sure.) Crackle offers "thousands of full-length movies and TV shows" for free.

Crackle is probably the most significant addition to the Xbox Live ecosystem. Its catalog includes movies, like Groundhog Day and The International, and TV series like Seinfeld and anime.

"In addition to these apps, we will continue to enhance and expand our global entertainment offerings on Xbox Live in 2012," a Microsoft representative told us.

How is Crackle...has anyone had experience with it before? If it's free it can't be that bad. Beats the hell out of yet another digital movie rental app. Seriously, how many of those do we really need?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Will check it out tommorrow. =)

Haven't taken my 360 on line in a while (Curse you, Skyward Sword!). I'm gonna go check out that Crackle app, right now!

Why is Crackle free? In this day and age that is unheard of.

Crackle is OK. It's free so It's hard to complain.
I find it hard to navigate/search (is there even a search button?) but everything else ran smooth.

It's just that simple.

Crackle is AWESOME. I've used it for a couple years now on PC, but it runs super smooth on Live as well... It's free, but there are commercials, but not as much or as long as on regular Hulu, and I've noticed that some of the commercials glitch out as well so it will say advertisement up top but I'll never actually get an ad, just an uninterrupted movie. They are short 15 second commercials too, not 30 or a min like on Hulu. They can do it because it's all Sony related products which includes all of their old shows and movies when they were more successful (Seinfeld), companies they have bought out or own or partnered with like Toho (Godzilla movies). They don't have to pay anyone else to use their content, it's all their own. There is enough entertainment there though to keep you watching forever, plus they have their own content specifically for Crackle.

It does seem like a lot, but this is by far the best app for movies or TV shows since it has a lot of content and is free.

BOOM!  FACE KICK!

One of my favorite series from the early 2000's, MTV's Spider-Man: The New Adventures is on Crackle. Check it out if you haven't already!

Wait wut, Crackle from Sony Pictures on a 360 console!?

I saw it earlier this week, downloaded it, can't say I was too impressed with the selection on it, it was certainly abysmal, but then again I did scratch the surface and didn't really look into it - and the Europe offerings might differ from the US ones.
