This years COD sold on hype almost no one on my 360 or PS3 friends list still plays this last night I saw a few people actually playing Black Ops. I know that isn't scientific or anything but it seems as though people want to be in on the event of the launch but arent really sticking to this game like previous games. I think the next one will be huge as well than a drop off also with the new gen coming around the corner I think it will give the chance for a new shooter to take the crown.

Maybe next gen?

It's weird how the CoD series works. MW3 is absolutely HORRIBLE so you would think that this would cause people to give up on the CoD series completely, but actually all it does is make people look forward to the next one and build hype for the sequel. Its ridiculous.

And I fully admit I'm in this boat, I despise MW3 but I'm really looking forward to Black Ops 2. In part because Treyarch's developers are actually active in the community and pay attention to what the fans want.

All I know is I'm done buying Infinity Ward Call of Duty games. I'll buy the next Treyarch one, but I've lost all faith in Inferior Ward. CoD4 was amazing, but MW2 and MW3 are complete ass and aren't ever going to get fixed.

It's not going to be for a while. It's like the Madden of FPS.

For some reason people want to buy the same game with different multiplayer maps every year.

There is a difference though ...

Madden literally has no competition; if you want a NFL football game with up-to-date rosters you really only have to buy Madded every year.

CoD has a lot of direct competition from clones made by other publishers, and also sees a lot of competition from other FPS games in general; and, much like how people got bored with WWII FPS games, eventually people will get tired of the Modern Warfare games.

It will be interesting to see what people move towards because, while I would like to see a return of more silly FPS like Duke Nukem and Redneck Rampage, what people migrate to from one generation to the next seems somewhat random.

The thing is though that there was competition for Madden at one time.  NFL Quarterback Club, Joe Montana Football, etc.  It wasn't good competition, but there was some.  Madden just wiped the floor with everything and who knows maybe CoD will eventually too because like you said, most of it's competition is clones and most people choose CoD over the clones because it's more established and in most cases more accessible.

I'm with you on seeing more silly FPS, but I just don't think that it's going to happen.

Madden was more successful than its competition, but the reason you don't see declining sales because of "boredom" because it is the only game that is still on the market; and it is the only game that remains on the market because EA entered into a long term exclusive licensing agreement with the NFL which killed their competition.

As much as I know activision would love to do this, they really can't make other games unviable through the use of exclusive licensing

I fully agree with you here, I bought Black Ops, skipped MW3, but am definitely considering buying Treyarch's next outing if I buy another CoD game ever, they seem to be the studio that actually put real effort and soul in their CoD games.

Couldn't agree more!

I'm impressed by how active Treyarch is in the community. Their community manager (David Vonderhaar) is really active on twitter and is constantly putting out ideas/suggestions and looking for feedback. They seem to actually take the communitie's feedback into account for their next game.

This is the exact opposite from IW. I don't know who in the world actually told them Deathstreaks and ridiculous quickscoping were great ideas in MW2 and should be brought back to MW3...but it certainly wasn't me.

If anything Battlefield will always offer some serious competition, but who knows? After all both franchises are currently growing. God knows when they'll stop.

My guess goes in line with Acevil: After BO2.

Never - CoD will never die, as saddening as that is

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
It'll be around for quite a long time i think but ive never bought one and never will ;)
My own little moan COD FANS BEWARE!:
Man i really get annoyed at COD its just the same game time and time again and people dont even play the campaign which if we're honest is pretty awful anyway. Its way too over rated as well especially the online which i think is bettered by BF3 and in some respects even MAG. Both Infinity Ward and Treyarch are brilliant developers and for me COD is just a waste of their talent. There, finished, out of my system.
Many people were doubting MW3 will even outsell BO, myself included.
Probably not till next gen, although yet again, I find myself scratching my head about this years COD. But then again - the userbase for HD consoles is growing, COD is mainstream so in theory it should exponentially grow as a franchise too, till they fuck up majorly. I am talking making ALL MP P2P or something along the lines of that.
The Generation change will probably hurt it. When its user base is split between the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PS4 and Xbox 360 successor profits will drop even if sales manage to sustain themselves.
