9.9 means a point has been deducted for whatever flaw has been found, 10 would mean that no flaws were found - the game is flawless. Giving a game a maximum score and then proceeding to say that the game is not perfect is a contradiction in itself. What if the game is absolutely perfect, without any flaws? (Highly unlikely, but it's a hypothesis) does that mean that it will get 11/10? Because its completely perfect does that mean that it deserves same score as a game that has faults? If there is room for improvement, you reflect that in a score, the whole scoring system has really gone to shit this generation, other than the last few VGC reviews I struggle to find any worth reading on the Internet, as most are either moneyhatted or the score is altered to get more traffic, because it doesn't fall in line with the review.

This is not a defensible position.

On a five-point system, do you hold that nothing should ever get higher than 4/5? After all, 5/5 is a perfect score, right?

Or let's take that a step further, even. In a system with a binary scale (Good and Bad), should nothing ever be rated positively?

That's what your argument implies, if nothing deserves a "perfect" score. Maximum scores do not mean flawless games.

i agree, thats why i rated it a 10, not because i think its perfect, but because uts my favorite game.

10/10

One of the better games in recent memory. The very definition of quality.

this guys vote counts since, he has been here for more than 1 year... sweet!!

Good:

  • Great voice-overs
  • Amazing graphics
  • Burning chateau level was pretty cool
  • Sinking ship segment was awesome
  • Good characters especially Sully
  • Some nice transitions between gameplay and cutscenes
  • Co-op & MP
Bad:
  • Mediocre gunplay
  • Melee combat is poor and pales in comparison to Batman.
  • Didn't like that they forced melee a bunch of times.
  • Also didn't like that the melee counter used the same button as picking up ammo/weapons. Whenever I wanted to counter the big dude's move, Drake would pick up ammo instead. That annoyed me.
  • Wonky cover system especially in tight spaces.
  • Desert segment was incredibly tedious. They had you walking in the desert for like fifteen minutes. You can't run, jump or do anything other than walk.
  • The first "drugged" sequence was also boring. They just had you walking in circles until the guy stopped talking.
  • Game finishes the same way Uncharted 2 did. Hell, a similar segment to the ending happened in the chateau level.
  • The last fight was terrible.
  • Poor pacing, especially in the beginning.
  • Cruise ship felt like filler.
  • Plot holes in story, and the story wasn't good to begin with.
  • Too many scripted events like having you run away or walk. There were like ten chase scenes which was an overkill imo. One or two is fine, but once you have that many, its novelty wears off and becomes old & annoying.
  • No single player bonuses.
There's probably more things I didn't like about U3, but that's all I could think of atm.
Score: 5.0/10

Gameplay: The shooting elements are solid. It doesn’t do much to innovate as far as core mechanics, but the gunplay works well. Likewise, the platforming doesn’t differentiate itself from other games, and the controls are a little too inconsistent at times. The melee fighting is fluid and responsive. Once again, it is competent but not all that original. The game also does a good job of mixing up the gameplay elements through cinematic elements and different settings. While the enemy AI usually functions well, they do act stupid at times. Overall, the gameplay is good but not great. It’s functional but lacks originality and has some minor performance issues. 7.5/10.0

Story: The core story is average. It suffices to progress you from one point to another but doesn’t offer anything memorable or meaningful. There are some pacing issues as well. The game slows to a crawl at some points. On the other hand, the characters and dialogue are great. 7.0/10.0

Graphics: I’m not that great at assessing graphics, but Uncharted 3 is a stellar looking game. It also offers a nice variety of locations and some truly remarkable sequences. 10.0/10.0

Sound: Once again, I’m not a technophile, but the sound is good. The music is fitting although not that memorable. The voice acting and sound are great. 9.5/10.0

Replayability: On the single-player front, the game lacks replayability. While the game was fun the first time through, the second time through was tedious because of the lack of action in some chapters. For example, the desert chapter was cool the first time though, but it is incredibly boring having to do this on subsequent playthroughs. Sadly, I haven’t been able to get into the multiplayer that much. If you like multiplayer though, there is a lot of content to enjoy. 6.0/10.0

Intangibles: Uncharted 3 sports some great action sequences and memorable set pieces. It also offers some great puzzles. They’re a bit simple, but they are creative and original. Some sequences can be a little too predictable though. Uncharted 3, like its predecessors, has its own unique feel, and there aren’t any games like it. 9.0/10.0

Overall: 8.1/10.0

Obviously it doesn't work on those examples as the spectrum of value is limited, but when the decimals are possible, with potential 100 different score that can be given, mentioning flaws and STILL giving it a 100/100 is contradiction in itself.

With the 5 point scoring system, there is a drastic difference between 4 and 5, a game can be 4.5 and round up to 5, in that case imperfect games can still achieve the 5, as rounding down would be unfair, however as I said before in an essentially 100/100 system, I don't understand how that can work legitimately, when people mention flaws in the game.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

It should. I must have missed it. I was kinda pre-occupied when tabulating this. Adding it in now and thanks for the notice!

yay!!

now i need to find a way to get that 5 not to count!

did he go into great detail enough for it to count, its freakin like 4.5 points off the average/metacritic.

arghh!! that review ticks me off!!!!

so close to 9/10. we just need 1 person to raise their score by .25

my math (witht the stupid 5) is

8.99/10

without the 5

9.12/10

Player1x3 never got back to me about whether he was ditto'ing Aldro's review or not. If he had gotten back to me I would've put him down for 10 as well. It's too late now though.

Does yukki's score bring it over a 9 for total score?

EDIT: Nevermind I see you already added it.

Damn you Pezus and your lucky win
