Forums - Gaming - Industry stigmas

Dear friends, we all know it. The industry is ridden with stigmas that skew our judgements of consoles, loopholes of which only the most informed can circumvent.

It is a fact, there are stigmas, and here are a few:

The 360 is a shooters platform. Since the explosive success of COD and the arrival of Kinect, the 360 is also seen as a casuals platform.

The PS3 is a platform for single men that like "cooler" games. It's also to a lesser extent for families playing LBP and using the eyetoy/move.

The Wii is a casuals console, and/or is for families and kids.

The DS is for casuals, and the PSP is good for MH in Japan and some other exlusive Japan-centric IPs.

Though you may agree or disagree with the examples listed above, this thread is not about that, don't try to argue them.

For this thread, I would like you to list a stigma, and list a possible counter-stigma (alternate, and more accurate stigma) as well as what you think is a reason of existence for that stigma. Here is an example:

Stigma: The Wii doesn't cater to the core.

Reason of existence: Nintendo's marketing to casuals, customer misinformation, customer lack of exposure to Wii games which cater to the core.

Correctness: Poor

Counter-Points: MH Tri, Tatsunoko versus Capcom, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands, Smash, Metroid Prime, Xenoblade, The Last Story, and many more.

Counter-Stigma: The Wii caters to the core and to casuals, but the general view is that, marketing-wise, the Wii is a casual-targeted console.

As an addendum, what do you believe are the stigmas for the upcoming consoles (it may still be a tad early for this, but at least try for Wii U).

Stigma: Wii U will cater to the online-savvy

Reason of existence: Nintendo press-releases, announcement of Ghost Recon Online, the rejection of the "Jimae Shugi" policy.

Correctness: Generally accurate

Precisions needed: Despite targeting the Online-savvy, the Wii U will also have a focus on the casual. To see how Nintendo will cater to both audiences without creating stigma crossing.

Thanks for posting!

Around the Network

Wow, just saw this thread on Google. Thought it was strange that I never noticed it. Probably because a few weeks ago Happydolphin was a nobody, when in fact he is our old friend Padib who permabanned himself like 2 months ago.
I know you said do not argue in your OP, but are you serious? Wii U has a stigma of being the place to go for online? I do not think Nintendo has ever had that image. A few pieces of info on the Wii U does not make it so.

Stigma: Nintendo games are stuck in their ways.

We saw this was not the case when Mario explored the galaxy, Zelda learned to fly, and Mario Kart 7 explored the ocean! Plus, Nintendo makes their game so much fun that they never really need to change much.

Thanks spurge! @Seth. I'm surprised noone posted either.

I didn't even realize you two posted here until today!

Anyways, What do you mean by Nintendo games are stuck in their ways? Do you mean people who say "Nintendo games are always the same?" If so that's a really good one.

@spurge. This thread is already so controversial, I was hoping people would post their own controversies and we could post things like why they don't make sense and offer counter-stigmas!

PS4 will copy Wii U controller with Vita and copy kinect with eyetoy.
- In general Sony is perceived as a me 2 product. They can't capture the imagination of gamers like Nintendo did with their Wii controllers or Microsoft with Kinect. Sony fails at "time to market" always to early or too late.

Move will be replaced with a breakable DS4 controller.
-(Patent pending) Since they copy kinect casuals don't need a simple move controller anymore ;)

Custom app store (lots of apps)
-Sony's relationship with Google/Android.

Disappointing hardware (shift from power to equipment).
-This generation Nintendo did a step back into raw power, Microsoft was cautious with 360 even 720 might be a disappointment (just 6 times). But Sony went all-in with high-end specs this gen. Sony is laggin' behind again, so low raw power next gen. More focus on developers by bundling hardware (DS4, eyetoy and console).
