Forums - Gaming - Sony Encouraged By 3DS Sales

"[3DS] is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device”

Sony have recently revealed that the shocking 3DS rebound seen over the Christmas period has encouraged them and proved that there is still space in the market for a dedicated handheld device.

The release of the PlayStation Vita hasn't been promising so far but like the 3DS, the PS Vita is most likely still 'finding its feet' and Jim Ryan, SCEE president and CEO, believes that 3DS is 'confounding the naysayers'.

“One of the encouraging things about 3DS’ sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device, and to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month.”

Ryan went onto say that smartphone's pose no threat as the Vita offers a far more impressive and rich experience.

“There are two distinct markets. The quality, the immersiveness, the richness of the experience that we believe we are going to offer on Vita, way exceeds anything that we believe to be available on any smartphone.”

Despite the constant doom and gloom of industry analysts it seems that Sony is confident their handheld has a place in the market and that Nintendo has already proved the worth of dedicated handheld devices.

ummm sony you are not nintendo

Nice to see more humility and respect from Sony's end. Reggie at CES did not impress me, and despite being "All PR talk", it's still annoying to hear. Glad the 3DS can be a leader for the dedicated handheld consoles and encourage all manufacturers by its success.

Sounds very different from the "3DS is humiliating" we were hearing only a year ago.
Great!

I think the 3DS did show that there is room. They had to fight tooth and nail to make room in the closet, but they found a spot. Sony will need to be willing to do the same thing with the Vita. They seem to be going in the right direction as well.

As for your sig....What's wrong with you Reggie! I want Nintendo 64 DD games on the Wii U VC in English!!!

but WiiU is not out yet

A dedicated handheld that has a lot of known franchises on it and got a sever cut, unless you can match that Sony you should be anything but encouraged.

You're right, Vita will have marvel vs capcom and call of duty. Definitely not Nintendo.

Well, I know three people who want nothing more than mvc3 ultimate on the go. They've never owned handhelds. I know it's anecdotal, and shit, I could even be making this up as far as you know, but even CoD:MW sold a million on a handheld system that was nowhere near as designed to play an fps.

It also interacts with the ps3, can unlock additional wiiU like functions on ps3, play games on teh go that you already own, and will soon enough have a monster hunter, no doubt about it. Vita is going to be so much more important in the US than psp ever was.

No handheld is capable of delivering what the vita can. No Phone, no handheld, no tablet.
