It could be the age of RPGs as much as they have been dumbed down this generation (Skyrim, Fable 2&3, Fallout 3, Dragon Age II, Mass Effect 2, Borderlands, Diablo 3 and the upcoming Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning).
The mass market gamer shouldn't have any problems getting into the big name RPGs of next gen.

just think of a Pokémon MMO (with a world as detailed and lively as in the movies) .. it would be fking legen.. wait for it ...dary
It's more wishful thinking than an objective analysis of trends, but JRPGs

I came in here to say exactly this. We're going to see a full-on resurgence of the 2D platformer, though it will never be as dominant as it was in the pre-Playstation days.
I made a thread like this some time ago; the majoirty of answers was 'FPS' and I have to agree. They are easy for casuals to get into, and they provide high entertainment and production values. There will still be Sandbox (GTA), JRPGs.
I also think WRPGs which have exceeded JRPGs this gen will be popular (Skyrim anyone?).
