Hydrogen is a highly reactive gas. It burns as soon it's in contact with oxygen, look at the Fukushima explosions. The heat dissociated the water onto oxygen and hydrogen, and it burned in a very violent explosion. It's much more instable than petrol.

Surely it won't burn if it is simply released into the air?, it needs a spark/flame or to be in extreme heat.

Years ago when I worked at the welding gas warehouse we carried a few bottles of compressed Hydrogen and (from what I remember) it is one of the only gasses which will react (almost) immediately without the need of a spark or flame ...

With that said, hydrogen fuel cells are designed to operate without storing any hydrogen which should be relatively safe.

Im with the sleepin with the oil company camp. Lets examine the auto industry. The oil companies tell american auto makers hey build gas guzzlers invest in our stock and well all make money. Then along comes japan with gas efficient cars and detroit stuck holding the bag.

Why are american cars more efficient in foreign countries than in america? It's all about the oil companies. When they bailed out the car manufactures I said what they should have done was got rid of the oil subsidies $15 billion. Thats half the $30 billion they receive.

No CONSUMERS told the car makers to make gas guzzlers.  SUV's were the big thing.

Electric cars aren't the long term solution to gasoline IMO...I see the future as hydrogen power i.e. the Honda Clarity

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_FCX_Clarity

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe so using it to power cars makes more sense than plugging them into a wall and then being able to go 100 kilometres and needing another 10 hour charge.

EPA and greenies won't let it happen since the best way to get hydrogen is to zap water into 2 H molecules. They cry foul that we are using water. WTF

The safe fuel cells are costly as hell to manufacture, so it's impractical in the short-mid term.

Wow that's ridiculous. They should just see it for what it is, taking air and turning it into a usable fuel.

Patents.
When new technologies (batteries, etc.) are developed, interested parties (oil companies, etc.) rush to buy the patents and lock them up so they are never used. When oil becomes unprofitable, they will have all the necessary technology under their belt to switch from an industry to another and continue making money.

Smart! Heck, that's what I would do if I were an oil exec.

If I can fit 5000 songs on a device the size of a credit card, they should have electric cars.....

Its not like when cars don't use oil anymore the oil industry will collapse we will always need oil, its used to make all sort of things.

Right now oil works so well at combustion why change it, there's still like 50 more years of it so the real smart people of the world will find a replacement in the meantime and make millions of it. Just chill...
