Forums - Gaming - In your opinion, have Japanese games as a whole fallen in quality in this gen?

@darkdescent everyone said what i wanted to say, except you ever think that maybe all those JRPGS being made on PS3 is because in Japan at least, there really is only two home consoles, PS3 and Wii and one of those is essentially a last gen system with a motion device added to it. 360 is a non factor over there, its not rocket science.

I don't really think so. I mean, there's a decrease in value maybe, but there's still a incredible amount of fantastic Japanese games out there.

Like I pointed out before the ones that released on ps3 only did well enough for the devs to release other games on it the ones that were ps3/360 all stopped making games for 360 so obviously it wasn't worth it. It could just be because it's cheaper to localize then to port but that really is the bottom line.

They stopped making games for 360 because they MS stopped moneyhatting, thats it in a nutshell.  Oh sure these games do better on PS3, duh. Japanese game, Japanese, but that doesnt mean that they shouldnt make a port for 360, not when 360 has a bigger install base in the US. By that logic they should stop making FPSs for PS3

If they would make money on it without MS money hatting they would but they didn't even seem to make money on 360 with MS money hatting. Shooting make money on the ps3, the games we are talking about don't make (much?) money on the 360.

Can you provide a link that says they dont make money, cause otherwise you're speculating.  And im sure MS gave a good chunk of change for every game they money hatted, it wasnt like the devs were not going to make a PS3 version of whatever. MS just paid to have it away from PS3 for a bit longer,

I think that the Japanese devlelopers(for the most part) are stuck in the past. When I played FF XIII, I couldn't believe how corny the dialogue was. If I was 10 or 15 years younger, I might have been able to handle that. I am of the generation where the NES was my first gaming console. I've matured, but many of the Japanese developers haven't. They are either putting out the same thing they have been for 25 years, give or take, or they are trying to copy western developers. I want a mature story. I'm still all about fantasy, but the over-the-top characters should be a thing of the past. I think all gamers want most of the core mechanics to be a part of the new iteration of their favorite gaming franchise, but we would also like to see innovation. Most of the Japanese develpers seem to have a case of lost identity, or remaking past games that were successes. Most of us want more.

I'd also add that most japanese games cater to japanese people, japanese people don't buy the 360 hence why there are fewer jp games on the 360. In America, where the 360 leads the HD market, these jp games are too japanese centric to please to this market so they sell too few copies to warrant a localization and/or a port to 360.

Nope. I play Japanese games with the same enthuthiasm as ever.

And if you observe closely you'll find that an increasing number of Japanese productions come West. Some years ago, who would have thought that games like Hyperdimension Neptune, Atelier Totori or Xenoblade could hit our shores? Those games obviously found an audience (however limited) because they keep coming. Figthing games also achieve far bigger numbers in the West than in Japan (look at Tekken 6!) and last time I checked there was no western fighting game on the market... I should also mention the success of Professor Layton and Naruto games that are a big hit in the west for example....

No the reason why there is that feeling is because big Western games are just TOO big : look at any GoTY article there's Call of Duty, Skyrim, Mass Effect, God of War, etc. everywhere. Western games are now so important that the industry itself (and the press by the way) acts like it can do without Japan and its games, like they don't exist anymore... and that is sad.

um what, first off, there is this game called Mortal Kombat and it IS a western developed fighting game and it is damn popular.

Xenoblade, Atelier?? Please in the PS1 era we were getting JRPGS right and left on a regular. Alot more than we get know, and that was because a liitle game called FF7 came and blew the damn door off, these days, we dont have an equvilent to that and they just dont make that much JRPGs on consoles as they used too, numbers dont lie.

I overlooked Mortal Kombat, sorry...

All the big guys in the Japanese industry want to Westernize so much and they are falling flat on their face trying to do that. While they are abandoning the Japanese market, it gives a chance for the little guys over there to expand their bases with the Japanese market. I think that's what we are seeing. There are plenty of great Japanese games this generation - they are just not named Final Fantasy. Look at Bayonetta, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, Xenoblade Chronicles, Demon Souls, the Yakuza series, Ni no Kuni, Catherine, etc. The quality is there, you just need to look harder.

I'm not sure that Western games have really gotten better this generation - especially if you have been a PC gamer. They have just gone from PC to Console - which naturally has made them more popular. Now that 2 of the 3 consoles are pseudo-PCs with an online service, I guess that's what happens.

I'll admit, I generally feel more "at home" playing Japanese games over Western ones. They still make the majority of my library.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
