Forums - Gaming - Difference in graphics: Lighting and shading effects

This generation has brought us alot of graphical wonders

There have been different types of ways in which developers have tried to to improve graphics of games to bring us the best but its seems that some of them seem very bland and un-like life.

When this generation first started, the graphics of the game would blow us away but as the generation progressed and i have started to noticing fine details. The enviornments in some games feel better and life-like than others.

For example:

set 1 - Crysis2(City part),Gears3(beta),Rage,Killzone,COD,GTA4,Forza3,Last Guardian(Bland,unreal)

vs

set 2 - Uncharted,Halo,Battlefield3,GT5,FF13,MGS4,GOW,Gears1(superb lighting effects,awesome textures)

From the above mentioned games.

I noticed and felt that games in the first set just felt dead.the enviornment was so bland and the lighting was too much.

The second set of games had awesome lighting effects and animations. The textures also looked alot better.

I am just discussing the beauty of the games not other things like physics and games

whats sort of lighting would you like for the future games to have?

You think Last Guardian looks bland?! To be honest I'm not having a difficult time understanding some of the differences in the lighting and shader effects between your set 1 & 2. You put Gears 3 in set 1 yet Gears 1 in set 2 but the textures in Gears 3 are far more detailed and they use the same engine.

Anyway, on lighting, I do think it's a bit over the top in some games, however it really depends on the look the developers are going for. In games with a pseudo-realistic look like Uncharted, God of War, and Halo then its fine because it's supposed to only mimic reality to a certain extent. On games where they're trying to go for a more realistic look (CoD, Forza) then the implementation needs to be more delicate as too much can ruin the realistic look.

gears3 has better textures but lighting effects make it a bit bland

alot of those games in set 1 have awesome textures too but the overall look could have been better with better lighting.

the last guardian is very very bland.just look at the trailer again.they try to be artistic but it comes off bad.

uncharted is also a very artistic series but the lighting levels the graphics of that game.by bland i mean the coloring and too much  light

battlefield is also realistic but it looks way better in textures and lighting than COD. same for GT5 over forza games.
