I should clarify the mouse on my computer does not have a pointer it uses the virtual pointer tracked and provided by the operating system or video game i am playing !
You dont point the mouse at the screen when playing FPS games - it works quite well still as long as my hand movement is translated corectly to the gamespace.
I own a gyromouse it has 2 mems gyros - you dont actually point it at the screen to control the cursor - but the vertical - horizontal rotation is tracked by the computer's OS so you could still use it like a pointer.
Beyond indirect pointing devices are are direct pointer's like a touchscreens, light gun , light pen WiiMote, GCon3 or graphics tablets these are direct screen coordinate input devices.
Direct input devices are even faster/better than indirect pointing (mouse) ! which is better than joysticks/ thunbsticks. (it does depend on the application which is most effective - mouse is superior to direct input devices for FPS games )
The sixaxis could implement an indirect virtual pointing system like a mouse. As you noticed it's incapable of direct pointing like the WiiMote.
