Forums - Microsoft - XBox Next chip just taped out?

SemiAccurate

Remember when we told you about the upcoming Xbox Next chip that was quite imminent? It looks like SemiAccurate’s moles were right on target, and some sources are now telling us that it just taped out.

Yeah, basically, the chip is ‘done’, and first silicon likely went in to the oven in the last two weeks. If this is true, Microsoft should have silicon back in time to give the families of XBox systems engineers a miserable holiday season, their loved ones will be doing breakneck bring-up work on Xbox Next.

In any case, we hear the PoR is still for mass production in December 2012, but that could change quite a bit depending on bugs, foundries, software, and devs. If that date holds, add 3 months for first mass production silicon out of whoever ends up making them, a few weeks for system production, and likely a few months for stockpiling launch quantities. This means late spring or early summer 2013 for a launch.

More interestingly, canvassing the dev community, something really interesting turned up, basically MS is being quite mum on their plans at this point. Normally, a game takes ~2 years to write from scratch, so you get devs in the loop early, especially on new hardware. This time, our checks come out with devs not having heard squat all, something that is quite unusual.

The implications of that are twofold, one is that launch is later than the Q2/2013 that it looks like from here, or two, that the developer’s job this time will be different. By that, I mean backwards compatibility, so you write for the XBox 360 and add features for the Next, or that you are forced to write generalized Metro stuff to a black box.

With luck, it will be a 100% superset of XBox 360 features, that would make life easier. If Microsoft decides to try and leverage the failed Wince/Windows Phone Whateveritisthisweek by making the XBox Next run the same VM/middleware, I can see a developer revolt and slews of lowest common denominator software packing the virtual shelves. At this point in time, the software ecosystem seems like it is going to be much more interesting than the hardware.

Speaking of said hardware, the chip itself is a little bit grey in areas. As we said last time, it is definitely an ATI GPU which lends itself towards the backwards compatible option. IBM is also involved, so eDRAM is very likely, something our sources are all confirming. This means the CPU is very likely to be a PowerPC of one sort or other too. Then again, as HardOCP wrote, there are strong and credible rumors of it being an AMD x86 core ala Trinity. In any case more SemiAccurate moles are still saying PowerPC, that architecture makes much more sense here.

Last up, we have the name to update. Previously, we told you the chip was called Obed or something similar. Sources have come forward to clarify, it was indeed a bit off, the real name is Oban. Sorry for the confusion, but if it helps, there is some good that comes out of it. If you want an easy way to tell which sites have a clue and real sources in the gaming world, do a search for “XBox Obed”. Look at the articles closely. When you see ones that breathlessly claim to have a source for the incorrect name ‘Obed’, especially ones that curious add details, you know which ones don’t have a clue. Unfortunately there are lots of them, and many more that don’t understand how to actually link right. The metagame is almost as much fun as console games.

Interesting details but, I don't think this forces a 2013 launch.

1) devs are rumored to of already had PCs with estimated final specs to begin coding, thus not having these final CPUs isn't a real hindrance to creating a launch game.

2) The software is likely to be based on Win8. why? because MS is moving as much as possible to have a full integration from its PCs, tablets, phones, and of course its media center/iTV/GoogleTV/game console. This is also seen in how Kinect is gaining more and more voice control over media and TV stuff outside of Xbox normal utilities. This means, devs already have a stable frame work to begin with in win8 (as its really far along) as well as all the other existing tools.

All this does is verify that MS has essentially completed the insides and full production can start Q1/Q2 leaving a good 6+ months to build a solid 3-5million units that would be more than capable of having a successful launch in late November/December 2012.

Makes sense, we won't see the 720 next holiday. X360 will get a price cut, will have Halo 4 and Star Wars Kinect, and do VERY well, it's last hurrah, then the 720 will launch the holiday after.

Please be true!

ATI GPU (Which has basically been rumored since '09) + IBM CPU ( & 32-48 mb eDRAM) would make me a very happy camper!

Mainly for these reasons:

Backwards Compatibility
Ease of development

Plus the ATI +IBM configuration has worked pretty well for all 3 companies for the 360, so at least it's a tried formula.

At least this gives me hope I'll get my precious Next Box during 2013. (2012 is unlikely because of Halo 4 & possible price-cut)

Microsoft got the 360 out IN NO TIME. Pretty ignorant to think they can't release before 2013.

They probably can, but this time around they really have no reason to. :) The Xbox brand is doing well, they're forking in money, unlike last time, Microsoft can wait for the moment they deem best.

Plus, It's unlikely they'll rush it again like last time, we all know how much that cost them in popularity & money.

I still firmly believe late Q3 or Q4 2013 and nothing here makes me think otherwise.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Basic rule of supply and demand.. The Xbox is in its 6th ( going on 7th ) year.. it has outsold itself each year.. and this year it is on pace to outsell itself again - going on last year sales... While still selling at a premium price..

The 360 is not far ahead of the PS3.. but even with the RROD fiasco MS lost only 1 Billion on repairs.. You're saying 'only' ??  Well... that's  25%  of what Sony has lost this generation on the PS3.. So even if PS3 would break even ( or surpass ) TOTAL world wide sales of the Xbox 360.. Sony will not profit from the PS3.. Why am i mentioning and why is this relatvent ?

Because the 360 will be profitable this generation overall.. and now its selling better then ever.. Going back to supply and demand.. this means from a financial point of view ( which ANY Company looks at first usually ) they will slow the launch of the NEXT Xbox because they are putting money in the bank.. MS  can take their time and focus more on quality this time in the next console ..  as Sony did with the PS2- MS will make this generation last a little longer then it might have..  Looking back - The PS2  lasted so long because it sold so well every year and it made a profit.. While the Xbox 360 is not on track to sell anywhere near the PS2 worldwide lifetime - The 360 HAS ALREADY outsold the PS2 "LIFETIME" IN THE USA.... Sony is not in the same boat with the PS3 as the PS2.. Sony will not be profitable this generation.  Selling a PS3 after the price drop hurt Sony more then it helped them.  They want to launch the PS4 with the Next Xbox. PERIOD.  That was their plan with the PS3.. but they didnt care as much then.  It is even more vital to Sony next generation - mainly because profit margins are small on the PS3 and any profits made this generation are virtually zeroed out by the massive losses ( on each console ) the first couple years of the PS3's life....  Sony began making a small profit on the PS3 console itself in mid 2010.. so small  that with the recent price drop ( that helped them sell more consoles ) they just posted a loss of 350 million US dollars.. thanks to the weakening of the YEN in world markets..

MS will likely announce the Next Xbox in 2012 .. but either way you're looking at a launch of no sooner then 2013..

Sorry folks but they arent going to "rush" out a console when the current one is still selling BETTER every year, MAKING a PROFIT, while selling at a premium price.... if anything they are going to milk it out as long as possible - just as Sony could do with the PS2..

1.RROD won't happen again. MS have enough resources to release the nextbox as quick as the 360 and improve where the 360 failed. All in all, they made such a wonderful move by being so aggressive with the 360 and they are the only one of the big three in the position to do it again.

2. A $99 360 will PWN even if a newer gen is available.

1: Possibly so, out of all 3, they do have the resources to try hardest, do they really need to though?

2: Yeah, you're probably right with this one. :)
