Forums - Sony - MotorStorm devs saved from Apocalypse by Sony

Joystiq

After the well-reviewed MotorStorm Apocalypse failed to move the sales needle in the states and Europe (it wasn't even released in Japan, following the March tsunami) Evolution Studios boss Matt Southern worried it would be the death of the studio. "We made a game we're really proud of and for some really heartbreaking reasons things didn't go so well," he told Eurogamer.

But like a late-race turbo boost saving a car from elimination, Southern said that Sony has given the studio a shot in the arm with the Vita-bound mini-racer, MotorStorm RC. "We split the company up into three teams, one making RC, one supporting MotorStorm Apocalypse post-launch with DLC and multiplayer, and another bunch of guys just brainstorming new ideas. In a climate like the one we've had this year, that is rare."

I loved this game, but getting delayed right before release for unforseeable (or atleast mostly unseeable)... had to have hurt it. Because, hell I was gonna buy it at launch and didn't just get until just recently for that very reason.

I hope they find success on the Vita. I really enjoyed playing past games with my friends.

Sony saving another cow from the slaughterhouse and can't save their own asses from the nuke in their own backyard. Someday sony will learn to let the little fish die to save the biggest one in the pond.

the sea is to big for Sony as is the ocean.

I'm glad they've been saved. The franchise is great, but they really, really messed up with Apoc. It's easily the worst in the series. I hope Sony's expectations aren't resting on RC being a hit though... it looks good but I don't see it doing well sales-wise.

I remember reading its a smaller team that has been working on that game for a while now so I think will make some good money out of it.

That doesn't really help when the rest of the studio is being unproductive. One part is continuing to support a game that didn't sell well while the other part is basically doing nothing at all.

well I wouldn't say unproductive. They need some new directions so its good a team is working on that, it's better to take a little time to brainstorm in a situation like this. and support for released games is a must, it may be small numbers but they shouldn't stop catering to the customers.

Well, it was delayed because of all the crazy stuff that happened over in Japan with the earthquake/tsunami. I'm not sure if the sales were hurt because of everything that went on, the delay it received or both things.

I haven't played Apocalypse, but pacific rift is one of the best racing games this gen. I hope things go better for them in the future.

yea the earthquake also messed up Sony's advertising for the game

i remember seeing ads everywhere saying that the game was "in stores now" but it actually wasn't because it was delayed
