Reports are flowing in this morning that GamePro the famous and popular gaming magazine and website are going to be shuttered very soon. Not to long ago we heard GamePro magazine was in trouble and was going from a monthly issue to a quarterly one as print publications continued to take devastating blow after blow. But it would appear the quarterly issue magazine wasn't able to save the brand. To blame the lack of advertising and income that the magazine and brand were able to generate, staff are beginning to get laid off nobody knows just how many will lose their jobs.
In a move that is shocking the whole gaming community the magazine isn't the only publication going down but GamePro's website is set to be shuttered as well. Once one of the most trusted sources in gaming now going to be a link to PCWorld. GamePro says they are "refocusing its US business exclusively on its growing custom publishing and solutions business." Fans shouldn't see this as the end of GamePro the "Fans of GamePro online will be able to access the latest games news, reviews, and 'how-tos' from the PCWorld editorial team. Visitors to gamepro.com will be redirected to the PCWorld GamePro channel on pcworld.com,"
Apparently in this new direction GamePro will continue but they will handle custom publications for events like E3 and such. The end of the website and magazine is surely going to affect us all. GamePro issued a farewell message of sorts saying.
“The U.S. editorial and business staff worked hard to earn a passionate, loyal following for GamePro and I am grateful for their dedication and hard work over the years,” said Mike Kisseberth, who is in charge of IDG's Consumer and Small Business media group. “GamePro, like all businesses, must keep up with industry changes and economic realities. Marci and her colleagues have tremendous expertise in the games arena, and now they will be putting that knowledge to work for the brands that gamers love. Look for GamePro Custom Solutions to be blazing new trails in online branding for the game industry, providing gamers with deeper, richer interactions with the companies and titles they most want to know about.”
What are your thoughts is this a sad day for gaming? Are you going to miss GamePro? What are some of your earlier memories of the magazine and/or website? Should the website have also been shuttered or just the magazine? Did GamePro go the right route in how they dealt with the print publication crisis?
