IGN sure loves to throw out 10's lately.
It's just that simple.
Infinity Blade is supported by Apple itself as far as I know. So it is not a direct indication of anything.
As a long time gamer and a smartphone owner, I don't think smartphones can't replace dedicated handhelds. 99% of the games are crap and the few good ones are crippled by the lack of controls. Some RPG's and some basic games in which not much input is required work well and that is it.
Some of the casual handheld owners are heading that way, that is for sure though.
There should be a smartphone gaming thread to discuss games.

Funny how you have the fewest posts in the thread so far and are also the newest user, but you're the first to provide a decent response to what I asked in the OP. Thanks for taking the time! AFAIK It's developed by Epic owned Chair, the same guys behind Shadow Complex. I don't know anything about Apple having a hand in it but I don't keep up on gaming for these devices. That's sort of what this thread is about. If Infinity Blade 2 is a big success (I think Infinity Blade 1 has been doing well and I do recall hearing something about it going free with micro-transactions a while back - as I said I don't really follow these platforms much so I'm not sure) might we see a reduction in the crappiness of games for these platforms as more big developers and publishers put a greater effort into their offerings for these platforms? And beyond that, do you think that said efforts will pay off in this market such that their focus on developing titles for dedicated gaming platforms is impacted negatively? |
Thanks :). I signed up one year ago but I don't post much because of my terrible English. It is difficult to get my point accross.
I am not very sure about Apple having a hand either, but at least it was shown in a big Iphone event. That itself is a big support I think.
Infinity Blade was a big success, if I recall correctly it broke records for a smartphone game. I don't own an Iphone so I can't comment on the gameplay but it looks like a QTE based- game, correct? I watched a few gameplay videos but I didn't really understand how it works.
I think the crappiness of the games is related to systems themselves more than the lack of effort shown by the developers. To give you an example, Gameloft games are high quality games. They are copycats of big games but so what, they are still very good on paper. If they were available on PSP, they would be great. Unfortunately, they are not fun to play on smartphones. Lack of a proper control scheme kills them. Developers make the games easier to make up for it which is even worse. Xperia Play was a good attempt but the because of the slidepad the phone was bulky. Another problem is the prices. It is a big risk to develop big budget games because you have to sell a lot to make a profit, so only a few publishers take the risk. Even EA makes games like tetris and as such.
With more and more big profile publishers joining the bandwagon I think quality of the games will be increased, but definitely not to somewhere very high.
Maybe I am negative about phone gaming because I want Vita to be successful so much, but I just don't see it replacing handhelds.

Haha well yeah. BTW my sig is like that because I lost a bet to aldro, all the talk about it is on my wall. (Still, my sig isn't too far from my real opinion)
I have been playing video games from the beginning....literally! I replaced my laptop with an ipad2 about 6 months ago, and just got an iPhone 4s a week after launch. So, I can say that the games are definitely "different" on iOS devices. I also can tell you that most of them were developed with low power small screens in mind. The most current games coming out are much closer to reaching the "core" gamers. They still do not have the controls that are easy to use for action games, but that will also improve over time. Reality is, the Vita should have come out 2 years ago... Now, within the next year or so, these mobile devices will be matching all the capabilities of the Vita, and they will be near free when you sign up for your cell carrier!
