They do, but that's why it's always prudent to keep a 3-Shell around you if you can xD. I always avoid getting turbo starts on those tracks because you'll always get bumped off in the confusion. And if you're lucky, a Bullet Bill on Rainbow Road Snes = Almost instant 1st place
