I have a tough time believing this. You can always lower prices, but you can't raise them. (unless it was a sale or something that was temporary)
On Amazon I was only able to fine a used one for 300. Searched retailers, nothing under 399.
I don't know about the rest of the world but the PS3 is now the cheapest Blu-Ray player in Canada. The cheapest Blu-Ray player being 450$.
I don't know if it went up in price though, since I never checked the prices before.

Takes a glance at the dictionary, oh look it really isn't.
No PS3 itself would be a disaster if it went up in price in the US. But the nerve of standalone players going up in price astounds me. Just on principle alone it amazes me!!

If you actually click on the price link you'd see those marked down prices are on used models.
