Forums - General - Is the death penalty a good idea?

There once was a time when most, if not all, nations had some form of death penalty to be administered against those who've committed very serious crimes, but many of these have abolished the system since.

Of course, there are some reasons for this - some say that due to there always being a slight chance that a person is wrongly convicted, it's not worth taking the risk by killing someone over it. However, others would say that there are some people that shouldn't be allowed to live their lives in prison, and that death is the only answer.

In these times of prison overcrowding, and many people starting to reconsider their beliefs over the ultimate punishment, do you believe that there is any situation where it is correct to take the life of another for a crime that they've committed?

in theory yes.
in practice sometimes.
the thing is, we jail the criminal for years, take care of them feed them, clothe them, entertain them, etc.
some after many years of waiting, and judicial proceedings, they are scheduled to be put to death.
we then take extra care that there is absolutely no pain felt, so we use chemicals and compounds that are very expensive, that require medical experts to be on staff.
all of this costs the tax payers millions of dollars.

Yes I think the death penalty should come back for serious and sick crimes.
I also think prisons need to get less "comfortable". I know a few people who have done long term and short term prison sentences and they all say that while they'd prefer to be free they don't mind prison life, going to the gym and tvs an consoles are there for them. In one case one guy actually preferred it in prison and constantly committed thievery to get put back inside.

Criminals should be scared of going to prison they should dread the idea of going inside and therefore it might deter them from committing crimes in the first place.
I'd give prisoners nothing, just the food and water they need and a couple of hours out of their cells to get some excercise of social time.

Yeah it's an actual prison xD. It's mostly for criminals with short sentences, so rapists/murderers etc. wouldn't be staying there. But still, that gymnasium is so much better than my schools! That kitchen is gorgeous. And the rooms are awesome, considering they are free -_-

looks like a pretty expensive hotel suite

No. The goal of a civilized society is to care for all of its denizens with some standards of minimum equality

Death should only be reserved for those whose survival poses an imminent security risk, like bin Laden

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Yes it is a good idea for sick minded people like serial killers and the like.

yes some people can't be rehabilitate and life in prison is to expensive you might as-well end it there for recidivist and give life for first time offenders that commit a crime that deserve that sentence.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
