I prefer to have reliable montly data as before that this approximation with around 2% of the data .......please change it back again .

We can always just take a calculator out and make up monthly charts...It's very easy to do.

Here's the issue:

VGChartz.com COULD become the new MC/Famitsu of the US.

Why is the box office industry more accurate than the gaming industry in the US? Because the system(s) have been far more developed. The studios needed timely information, so they got it. The statistic companies can electronically obtain the information within hours of the theatre closings/openings due to the fact that these places actually carry the numbers themselves and transmit them to the gathering places.

MC/Famitsu are the same, they are able to get information via the point-of-sale systems and extrapolate.

For NPD, I am sure they *can* do the same thing, but don't. NPD is a huge multi-faceted business that is an evil entity. They charge their clients $10,000 a month for the information. The information isn't really THAT hard to get ahold of. All you need is to get enough stores/chains to spend about 5 minutes E-mailing the sales information. No biggie. You then extrapolate the rest of the information.

NPD collects 60% of the information due to the fact they've been around for such a long time. How accurate could VGchartz's numbers be with the weekly info? Very accurate. Famitsu, in the olden days (early 90s) only had 6% of the total sales info, and extrapolated the rest of the data. That was when they were considered the king of information.

We'll know the truth in about 6 hours when NPD for march comes out. And we'll know even better once April NPD comes out. The big question is if VGChartz is still tracking the 10% for Canada/Mexico/Ect or not.

Either way, seeing that the 360 is doing 80k a week is VERY VERY fun to see, hehe :)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Are you just able to get the info for certain games?

For example, the second I saw the weekly charts I went to look for SSX Blur, but found it did not crack even the late feb. chart/early march . Is it true that the game flopped that badly?!? Or can you just find enough information to report on it.

For SSX Blur -

For the Feb. NPD/NA charts, showed SSX at only 22k at the end of the month. It might of dropped off the face of the planet even quicker than we thought.

Another idea we have began to explore is randomly polling buyers (the users of this site would be a good start) on a weekly basis to find out what titles they have bought. With a large enough sample size this, combined with retailer info and so on could be a strong step in the right direction. An interactive poll where users can vote once per week maybe - although this is open to "cheating". I guess only being able to select each game once would limit this to an extent but the idea still needs to be thought through.

I'd really like to develop vgchartz in this direction. Tha game database will be running soon, with page popularities and game rankings. We can estimate sales from users and also from a sample of retailers, conduct online research to see what games are most anticipated and so on, develop the predictions league further to use the community as an in-house anaylst. It could actually turn into a very powerful and respected information source indeed, even for industry.

Please please keep thought and comments coming in, these are potentially really huge developments.

Bad idea ,websites about games are nests of fanboys ....that wouldnt be representative .

I'm sure many retailers do collect point of sale information. I have been looking into how NPD collect their info and you are not a million miles away. I honestly don't think it would be difficult to provide a free weekly top 50/100 maybe 200 service + hardware by obtaining data from something like ~10% of retailers and scaling. It wouldn't be perfect but would be actually a lot more accurate than you would think. Again, if anybody has contacts / knows anybody we should speak to or who could help then get in touch. Let's make this happen.

Maybe you should talk to the retailers themselves. Show them the website and the traffic details, exchange theestimated info for advertising deals, links from the chart themselves to take them directly to the company's online store etc. Basically, consider the site as a start up for-profit company and run it like one.

Gamefly is a good start, me thinks. Not exactly point of sale, but they should give you an idea, and they do sell used games. I think they sponsor GoNintendo. Don't bother talking with walmart. they keep thier stuff secret, and as you all know, even from NPD.

Oh yeah, one last thing. I don't like the idea of online polls. Too easy to manipulate and can heavilly skew the results. You're better off focusing your resources to something more productive.

I can't believe there is people that actually prefer monthly figures. Weekly is way better, don't you want to know figures more often? Hello? I'm thrilled by this change. Granted there is the concern of accuracy, I'm sure like most people on this site I don't own the company selling these games, so exact figures are not nessecary to anything I do, ballpark figures are just fine. For example in Japan the number for last week was around 60,000 for the Wii. If it was anywhere between 50-70,000 I would have been content, refering to its accuracy. Anywhere in that range gives me about the same impression of the system sales there, and that's alot of leeway. I'm sure the percentages that these sales are off by are smaller. Now I know these numbers add up and can change a picture drastically if a consistent mistake is made in the same direction for a long duration. But I'm sure the numbers will be corrected as they have time to analyze more data from more sources over time. So really folks whats the big deal?

My only problem is there is no option to search for a particular titles' sales in America, as there is in Japan's data. it's fustrating to look up the release month and then track every months of it's sales to get a total, I'd much rather have a search option. And I hope there is soon more then 50 titles addressed for American sales, Japan has like what...200? So it would be nice to at least get 100. And I'd love to get any chart at all for Europe. Alright I'll stop now, I love the site and consider this a positive development in the long run.

Yeah I did think that myself when I posted. You would likely get higher sales for critically acclaimed titles like Trauma Center, Yakuza etc and less for Pokemon, Hannah Montanna and so forth, unless we had a way of actively targetting "casual" gamers. I don't know, still an idea at this stage - I think it has some potential if implemented in the correct way. This is essentially how tv viewing figures are arrived at and so on.

The only way I could see a Poll like such would work is if you hit the big chains weekly and actually poll people who are making game purchases as they are leaving the store

Well as long as VGchartz is within 3-5% accuracy for its data then I would consider it authoritative
