Forums - Gaming - Study: Wii U, Vita Don't Interest Japanese Gamers

"A new study by Japanese survey group Goo Research has discovered that only ten percent of Japanese gamers are interested in buying the Wii U and PlayStation Vita. A survey conducted between October 17th and 19th asked 1,083 people about their interest in upcoming consoles.

Of those surveyed, only 9.4% said they would buy a Wii U, 36.1% said they were interested but wouldn't purchase one and 54.5% said they weren't interested in the console at all. For Vita, 10.2% said they would buy the handheld, 35.2% said they were interested but wouldn't buy one and 54.5% said they had no interest.

The survey group was 53% male, and 694 of them owned at least one game system. The survey covered an even assortment of ages from teens up to those fifty or older. Over 62% of those surveyed owned a system from the Nintendo DS family, while others also owned PlayStation 2, Wii, PSP and PS3.

These results come just weeks after Nintendo reported its financial struggles and Sony predicted big losses. "

we'll have to wait and see how this developes although the study imo doesn't seem to have been a very good one

I think it bodes worse for Vita than it does for Wii U. Wii U is little more than a concept at this point, albeit a concept that we know will exist in the foreseeable future. Vita has a price point, games, and an imminent release

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

One survey does not equal realization. Look at PSP sales...Vita is going to do very well in Japan

PSN: Saugeen-Uwo     Feel free to add me (put Vg Chartz as MSG)!

Nintendo Network ID: Saugeen-Uwo

But but but... Sony said that demand for Vita is sky high! lol

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

This does look bad for the consoles, I think we are all just to comfortable with the consoles we own still
Its gonna be hard convincing people to upgrade during these tough times

Yeah, interview Wii and PSP haters and you get these types of results.

But Sony told me that 65% of Ps3 owners would buy a VITA!

Amazing demand for wii U is high. The system is neck to neck to vita. I believe wii u will be a mega hit now

That or Vita is low in hype in japan

Pick one

I agree with the sentiment that the study is hardly a good barometer of the situation. The data set is simply not at all substantial enough to draw any reasonable conclusions. This is hardly a example of comprehensive polling. I am not disagreeing with the outcome however. This very well may be the case, but it doesn't mean that the polling was well done. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and seeing as there are only three possibilities good, middling, or bad then it is really a one in three chance of being dead on the money.

There is a reason that statistical surveys are often considered to be junk science. The methodology is often faulty, or the workmanship is questionable. When you sample a small group in a restricted time frame, and probably in a geographically limited area. You are just asking for wildly inaccurate results. People could be down on gaming for no other reason then the financial news was dire in the days in question. You really need to cast a wide net when doing statistical surveys to counteract small anomalies otherwise you run the risk of making a mountain out of what amounts to a mole hill.

Bottom line don't read too much into this. Maybe if the survey was of ten thousand over the space of a couple of weeks in a number of places you might have a little of something, but this could be totally wrong due to a bad news cycle.
