Forums - Gaming - are there any strategy rpg games that let you walk freely

final fantasy tactics lets you choose your destination on the world map.  suikoden tactics is basically the same way.  phantom brave lets you walk around a little bit in your home area but then you gotta choose locations from a map.  are there any strategy games that let you walk freely and have a random battle system like the classic jrpg?  this really isnt a rant page or anything, im just wondering cuz i think this would be a decent idea.

Good question, I think that'd be great as well.

The Arc The Lad series is the only one I can think of. Especially, Arc The Lad: Twilight of the Spirits.

Fallout 1 and 2.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Sacrifice, Battlezone 2 and Dungeon Keeper might be up your alley.

They are fairly old games now though which might put you off, but I thoroughly enjoyed both of them on PC.

Essentially they are first-person RTS games. Battlezone you run around in 3D, take control of vehicles and buildings, build a base, gather resources and take out the enemy.

Sacrifice... You're a wizard that runs around collecting souls to summon an army and build structures, you can cast spells that deform the terrain.

Dungeon Keeper, love this game. You're a "Dungeon lord", full of black humor. You build a dungeon, trap heroes, mine resources and destroy your enemies.
However... You also get a "Possession" spell to enter into a first-person perspective on any of your units.

Now, I know they don't have RPG elements, just thought you might find them interesting as-well as they are games known for mixing elements from various genres.

Then you have Evolva... You're a creature that runs around, killing, gathering DNA' and stuff to "evolve". It's 3rd person, I don't remember there being a story to it. But you do need to use strategy to build your character to fit the environment and enemies.

Anyway, hope it's helped. :)
