Well we all know that RockStar appeared to show it is now supporting the mobile games industry with its release of the original GTA III on the iOS and Android platforms So that shows that RockStar is a supporter of mobile gaming right? That they support the games industry found on iOS and Android devices. Or do they? Could we be jumping the gun in assuming the release of RockStar games on mobile platforms show they actually support those platforms very industry (The developers)? Well Rock Star Games vice president of creativity Dan Houser has some staunch words to say about the industry found on mobile devices.
Houser begins his all out assault on the developers that support mobile gaming saying "I think a lot of people in the general mobile industry are more focused on making money than making good products," Out lining similar comments from other game industry executives he continues, "We're a business, too," "we have to think about how to build revenue and we value the knowledge you need for that, but we want to conduct business with superior products. Focusing on nothing but business is depressing to me; it's boring. I want people to understand that we make games for more than just to make money."
Going from the offensive against the industry norms to show how RockStar views the mobile industry in a better way then the competition who is just looking for a quick buck, he states "Our mobile strategy is not at all different from our console strategy in other words, we don't have one," taking another jab at his cheapo competitors by showing his companies great business practices Houser outlines more of RockStar's policies "Our focus is purely on making games that we can be confident on the quality of. We've never made something because we felt it was a business opportunity or because we thought there was some niche in the marketplace we could fill."He continues comparing mobile platforms to the gaming portables we play today "I don't think mobile is going to swallow up video games, but it an important topic. The massive phenomenon we saw when portable game systems came out has already spread over the mobile market, but we've experienced successes and failures in portables in the past."
GamePro points out that this may not all be as true as Houser would like you to think, . It would appear that RockStar is going to cash in like everyone else, or will they? Do you think RockStar will really release only games they think are perfect ignoring the profit margins to release high quality software? Or is this all PR bullshit and RockStar is just like every other mobile developer they are in it for the money and money alone?
Whats your take on Houser's RockStar is it the real RockStar? Sites are already speculating a version of GTAV might be headed to mobile devices, if true do you think it will be a watered down port? Or do you think RockStar will give it the best treatment building it from the ground up for mobile devices?
