Well, I like Everquest II but WoW has the advantage of making new players feel important and at ease right from the start. Which would explain its popularity.
Also, when you die in WoW you don't feel really penalized, but in Everquest there's an XP debt. When you're in a party you can have an XP debt because of the other players.
I've noticed small differences like those, but ultimately I don't favor one of these two games over the other.
