Tagged games:

i love this thread and the folk here haha. for example on one side some people here say it's not fair to compare batman with uncharted because batman has only half as much reviews as uncharted has and on the other side same people make party about the 20 perfect scores camparing it with batman's.

omg I remember a poll a while back about which would end up higher, GeOW3 or U3 - I thought it was ridiculous but now it could actually happen!!!

*gamerankings U3 is already lower! :-O

Uncharted will win the GOTY award. What a nice game. Everything is almost perfect

now 70 critics

Added Gamer.nl 90 .

metacritic is just getting ridiculous now. im seeing perfect scores coming in all the time, yet im seeing 75's and 80's added. seriously thinking uncharted will settle on the 90/91 mark which is a joke considering how amazing the game is. companies just seem to review it in comparison with uncharted 2 which is not fair.

that's nothing, Gamerankings has it at 91.28. VERY pissed off about that. The game is every bit as good and better than Uncharted 2....yet it's getting a lot of bullshit reviews.

Bullshit.

Gamerankings can't be blamed for that, really; they're just presenting the mean average of reviews of registered publications.

I know, but the point is that there are people out there giving the game a mediocre score simply because it didn't wow us like uncharted 2 did, in spite of the fact that it's objectively better.  Better co op, better competitive multiplayer, and an equal or better campaign. I just don't like how people review games based on hype rather than actual quality.

Well, I kind of get that, but you said yourself you'd tend to give the games high 80's, low 90's.... if it's got a bunch of overrating scores and some underrating scores, doesn't that balance?

I swear I don't get some of the criticisms in certain reviews. I haven't played much of UC3 yet, but my son is nearly half way through. He's a reasonably good gamer, but he's not great at gaming (I'm still a marginally better gamer in some respects). I asked him about the aiming, he said he's had no problems. I said some people have complained about difficulty in getting head shots, he said no problems there. He said he feels like the aiming and shooting is just like the other 2 games.

Looks to me like reviewers are over criticising the linearity too. There are highly linear parts and there are relatively open parts. For a game that's meant to be a meld of action movie and video game it seems like just right.

My son also really loves the puzzles, reckons they're some of the best he's seen in games. Some reviewers have been saying the puzzles are a real let down.

All very odd. I'm quite sure I'll like this game at least as much as Uncharted 2. In which case I'll give it the same score as Uncharted 2: 8.5/10. I rarely give 9/10, I don't think I've ever given 9.5/10. I will never do 10/10, every game has its faults.

TBH the game is solid in all aspects for its genre.  I can see no way to give less than 8/10 for a game that does everything basically right and in many areas excels.  The aiming is fine.  They did change it from U2 and I think it was the change that caused the issue - i.e. people wondering why it felt different - but it works just as well.  The puzzles are the best yet in the franchise as they are real puzzles this time - i.e .the game doesn't hand them to you like the first or second, this time you do need to think a bit yourself.

The melee is better and the story is solid with arguably an even better script and more character subtlety than before (although for a videogame maybe this is a negative to some but I don't think fairly for the genre).

The linerarity is the best yet too.  Many battle are more open letting you pick your strategy more linked to a clear narrative flow (which you need to achieve anything like this level of narrative, as the likes of GTA, Oblivion and others show in their inability to tell a story like this).  And a number of the set pieces are the besst I've seen in a videogame - the plane sequence particularly.

Pretty much every sensible review has been in the 8 to 10 range.  Only a few clearly flawed reviews fall outside this and reading them they are criticising the game for not being something else rather than what it is, which is actually pretty poor criticism of course.

I could write an essay on U3 though, and how I think it interestingly pushes against the limits, currently, of how far you can re-create a cinematic narrative without overly exposing the flaws (in narrative context) of doing so within a videogame environment.  I do think some of the complaints are from people who, without realizing it, are sensing that in some ways U3 exposes flaws in videogame medium to convey this level of narrative and character.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
