Forums - Sony - Warner Bros. Announces Exclusive Suport of Blue Ray.

I don't know why people are so happy... Sure, it's good if this stupid format war ends, but did it have to be with the region-locked, most DRM-ridden format? I'll probably stick with DVD for a few more years at least.

Only new releases are required to be region locked on Blu-Ray, and this is purely to solve international release issues. For example, Hairspray has been released on both Blu-Ray and DVD in the US, but New Line was forced to hold of on the HD DVD release because it would infringe on the theatrical runs of the film in Europe, where it is still being played.

Also, most older films (1+ years old) are not region encoded on Blu-Ray.

How is region encoding a bad thing in this situation?

SO, when do you guys think we'll start to see the affects of Warner Bros. actions. (ie Blu Ray wipesout hddvd).

Things will start to slow drastically for HD DVD as news of this spreads, as it will turn off potential buyers, cause HD DVD owners to go format neutral, and cause dual format owners to curb their HD DVD buying habits. This will cause sales to slwow drastically, decreasing retail space, which already heavily favors Blu.

Things won't really end until after May, when Warner stops releasing on HD DVD, removing over 1/3rd of HD DVD's catalog, including major titles like 300, Batman Begins, and other top sellers on HD DVD.

That is really presumptive. It could happen, but don't pretend this is anything other than a guess right now. We don't know what consumers are going to do.

Indeed, my use of the word "drastically" is a bit of an exagerration. Things will slow, and what I said will happen over time (imo), however.

Once Warner's titles begin to go out of stock, HD DVD's sales will fall far behind Blu-Ray's, simply because of lack of content, let alone a smaller install base. Three out of the four top sellers on HD DVD in 2007 were Warner titles: 300, Planet Earth, and Batman Begins. What happens when titles like those and Harry Potter disappear? And new titles like the Dark Knight are released exclusively on Blu-Ray? Or the Lord of the Rings? HD DVD cannot survive on just Universal and Paramount, especially since Spielberg's titles are specifically excluded from all exclusivity deals, including Indiana Jones, ET, Jurassic Park, etc.

Oh, being out of sotck would of course do that. It would have helped to put that in there.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I can't wait to see LotR on Blu. New Line will give it a Blu-Ray specific encode now, instead of porting over the low bitrate HD DVD encode like Warner has been doing for all it's releases.

The first Blu-Ray specific encode from either studio was New Line's Shoot 'Em Up, released just a few days ago. If that wasn't a hint at things to come, I don't know what was, lol.

BTW, I think makingmusic honestly likes blu-ray, just that his comments are not always clear about it. Others, like the OP, mars, and squall, are just jerks.

Oh, I figured people would make that connection.

And I kinda did say it, in a way, lol. *points to bolded bit*

Isn't the bitrate is to squeeze it all on one disc, not due to HD-DVD matching?

Lol? Now I'm wondering if you are really about blu-ray over gloating.

What'll be interesting is to check the movie internet sites and see the response there. That'll give some indication of how the movie crowd view the impact (and remember, just like with gaming sites those active on the site are likely to be the big purchasers of movies/shows).

Warner: New Line, HBO Not Covered By Blu-ray Announcement

Fri Jan 04, 2008 at 08:35 PM ET

Though it's widely expected that Warner Bros. subsidiaries New Line and HBO will follow Warner Home Entertainment to Blu-ray exclusivity, for the moment they remain format-agnostic.

That's according to Warner Home Entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara, who said that the studio's announcement that it would drop HD DVD support does not extend to titles released by New Line, HBO or the BBC (which Warner distributes here in the US).

"They'll be making whatever decision they're going to make," said Tsujihara. "I assume they'll let people know very quickly, but they are not covered by this initial announcement."

Tsujihara's comments came in a post-announcement conference call with various members of the media, including High-Def Digest.

Stay tuned for more news from the Warner conference call...

And the circle-jerking just keeps on coming.

Yet this does mean a LotR trilogy is still likely on both formats.

Yeah, the only reason I've wanted HD DVD to die (to put it bluntly), was because it's been obvious Blu-Ray was going to win for a while now, and the sooner it does, the sooner neutral studios take advantage of Blu-Ray's space and bitrates, and the sooner HDM in general takes off.  Deuling formats isn't good for anybody, and since Blu was already so far ahead, I figured it why would we want to go through all of the trouble of having HD DVD gradually making a turn around, then eventually pass up Blu-Ray, then, in a few years, finally almost killing off BD, better never fully being abel to put the format to rest because of the ps3 (at which point Blu-Ray would become like UMD).  The whole scenario seemed like a waste of time, when we could have on format in only a year, maybe less, so why the hell not?
