the thing is, if it isn't timed, but really with a hands free sensor, then they are still "operating" it.

way to cheat your god, like hiding meat in dough on fridays

This is actually quite true. The hands-free sensor doesn't really help them.

In a modern "multicultural" society governments are constantly spending money to accommodate the wishes of a small minority of the population. As far as these kind of accommodations go this one does not seem all that extreme being that it doesn’t infringe upon the rights of the majority of individuals, and does not exclude anyone from using what they have built.

The problem is that Orthodox Judaism is pretty much incompatible with modern society, and as society advances, and technology becomes an even more integral part of people's lives, this incompatibility will become even more proeminent. There are certain things that even multicultural societies can't accommodate. Such conservatism does nothing more than harm people.

I'm an optimist. At least it's one less place where germs can be transferred.

Good one!

But what about the radiations from the sensor?

Surely they are still using electricity by using the lights to tell them when to cross... I'm confused...

B) what kowenicki said, a button is a button no matter what method you use to push it so i'm confused how this panders to the orthodox jews in any way??

A) is is a nominal cost to an existing renovation -- why are people getting so upset? there are some hands free sensors in chicago, it has nothing to do with jews as far as i know, and they are slick compared to the button alternative.  less likely to break for one, and i don't have to touch some gross, germ ridden button for two.
