Forums - Sony - Battlefield 3: "We're Pushing" The PS3's Limits "Big-Time"- DICE

The developers seem to be pushing the PS3′s limits a lot these days, and DICE definitely have to be one of those many devs. DICE recently showed off a lengthy campaign gameplay video that was being played on the PS3, and it looked magnificent. But not only did it have some awesome effects and great attention to detail when talking in terms of visual prowess, it was also huge in size.

When asked about this, DICE Producer Patrick Liu revealed that they could manage such a large size of maps and arenas because of the FrostBite 2.0 engine: ”That’s Frostbite 2 and our new streaming technology. We didn’t have that in Frostbite 1,” he told in an interview. “It enables us to build bigger maps, whether they’re interior maps or open exterior sandbox environments. We wanted to push the scale as much as possible, and our new streaming technology is essential for that.”

When asked about the stunning visuals that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 managed to achieve, Liu said: “We’re very confident – we’re pushing the hardware big-time. Of course, we have a performance budget that we have to hit.

“Everything counts into that: the scale costs performance, destruction, animation, special effects…those are all the things we cram in there,” he continued. “I feel really good about where we ended up with on the PS3.”

Battlefield 3 currently has a multiplayer beta opened to the public. You can read our impressions here. After taking the fan feedback of this beta into consideration, DICE also listed the changes they will be making to the final version of the game.

developer's always say that, but I'm just glad there going to fix all of those things.

Try pushing it a little less, the screen tearing is all over the place.

The beta is soo bad. I know at least 4 friends on XBL who completely lost interest in BF3 based on how bad the beta is.

I know they can fix some things like the horrible servers and the glitches, but how can they fix the camping, slow paced gameplay? I can count the number of deaths I've had from being outplayed gun on gun on one hand, but I've lost count of the deaths I've had from a guy prone in the middle of nowhere, crouched in some bushes, hiding between some trees/rocks, etc. I'm not saying this is a development flaw, but a problem with the community.

The beta is good but its pleged with snipers and for that reason alone I wont be getting it.

It seems the server problems are worse on XBL. I have had server problems obviously but only 3 times have I been dissconnected or had noticeable lag (I am rank 31). The bugs can be really annoying, there is no denying.

To earlier people saying the pace is to slow, Battlefield IS NOT a fast-paced shooter. It will have people proning and crawling over the ground. The recon class needs to become nerfed even further, I agree but furthermore there is little they can do, the big light the lenses give already gives them a big disadvantage.

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Push it harder guys, because the beta is BORING.

so why not become a sniper yourself. so you won't be getting it based on one map in a beta.

I suck at sniping :P. There just nothing more frustrating imo then snipers I stopped playing bad company 2 and MAG because there everywhere, this doesnt bother me in other shooters since the maps are smaller so they cant get a clear shoot straight down the map. Maybe I spoke to soon about not getting it but its definitly not a day 1

I just want Dark Souls already ok!

Well, now on to the topic at hand, the beta definitely has it's glitches and what now which annoys me very much and I don't see how they're pushing the ps3's limits because it doesn't look better than killzone or uncharted even with it's supposed sense of scale.
